State Of Emergency

at

This afternoon.

Via Fergal Bowers at RTÉ News:

The highest level of attendances at emergency departments on record has been seen in the past week, with 28,000 patients attending, according to the Health Service Executive.

HSE Chief Operations Officer Anne O’Connor said that many of those attending were older, sicker, more frail and stay in hospital longer.

Ms O’Connor said that the HSE hopes the peak is a temporary trend and a delayed winter surge.

The average daily trolley count for the past week is 333.

What could possibly be the emergency?

Anyone?

And the true dire state of a health service run into the ground is showing
I say Tony and his Ilk are running out of excuses
As soon as it implodes the better
The sad thing is the public pay the price

They stay in hospital longer because there are little or no step down facilities available. Maybe Anne O’Connor could give her thoughts on that?

A visit to ER and an emergency operation saved my life last month. But when I went back with post-op pain recently I got an earful from a foreign born ER doctor. In his words – “Ireland is crazy. When you are sick and you call your doctor and they tell you to come in in 3 days time. The ER is taking up the slack and that means that real emergencies get slower responses even when triage is working perfectly.” There was more but you get the drift.
I know what he means because, like him, I can compare this country with other places based on my own experience. I’ve been living abroad for the last couple of decades. And while its not surprising that Ireland compares poorly with some places I’ve lived in like France or Spain, its really depressing when things are much better in Hungary or in South East Asia. Its only my experience of course, but out of the 7 countries that I’ve lived in for more than a year, Ireland seems to have the most over run hospitals and gp practices. I’ve had the misfortune to end up in two different hospital ERs in the last year. I’m very happy that thanks to their intervention I am not dead and I feel for the medical staff overworked and with minimal resources. But what’s happened to the health system here is an utter disgrace. Its obviously a political failure of the first order. This is not a country where you would want to grow old on less than a 6 figure income with corresponding medical insurance. To get treatment, I’ve had to get on a plane and go to another and theoretically far lower income country to access medical resources. I don’t have a lot of money but nor am I anxious to die because I’m stuck on a waiting list. Its just appalling how bad things have gotten here.
