Former EU Commissioner Phil Hogan in this morning’s French daily Libération

This morning.

Further to former EU Commissioner Phil Hogan’s golfgate resignation…

Vie RTÉ News:

In an interview with French newspaper, Libération, Mr Hogan is understood to have suggested taking action against the Commission.

The paper’s long time Europe Correspondent, Jean Quatremer, writes that he met Mr Hogan for an exclusive interview and that Mr Hogan “did not rule out the idea of demanding compensation for the damage suffered“.

Mr Hogan had previously apologised for attending the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Clifden, Co Galway, but denied that he breached Covid-19 quarantine rules.

In the interview, Mr Hogan said that during the golf dinner, he had been sitting next to the former minister for agriculture Dara Calleary, who, he said “participated in the Government meeting which decided on the new restrictions“.

The paper says that Mr Hogan met the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen four times in three days following the controversy, which erupted on 17 August.

Meanwhile…

On Monday, 24 August, according to Mr Quatremer, Ms von der Leyen asked Mr Hogan to write a precise chronology of his movements.

However, Mr Hogan is quoted as saying that at this meeting he felt “that she wants to end this affair as quickly as possible and that she wants me to leave. She immediately believed in the interpretation given by the Irish Government, which claimed that I had undermined its pandemic strategy by my actions.”

The paper states that the following day, Ms von der Leyen “demanded” that Mr Hogan give an interview to RTÉ “to explain himself”.

Mr Quatremer writes: “A commission president who manages the media agenda of a commissioner is undoubtedly a first.”

Am I wrong, or did he wander all over the country when we were meant to be in lockdown, and then lie about his movements?
I don’t think he has a leg to stand on, but brass necks among that cohort are the norm.

      Here, where’s me fiddle?

He broke the isolation rules anyway. He was driving around the country meeting people after flying home form Brussels without isolating for the period required at the time.

Would being upfront about it have changed anything? He still carried on as though the restrictions in place at the time were beneath him.

The lying is just insult to injury, though hardly surprising.

I personally found them to be beneath me too, I take it you didn’t… you should try getting off your knees one of these days, though I’m sure you believe yourself to be on the high horse.

He apologised for something he did that ultimately wasn’t illegal. He prejudiced himself the silly man.

    1. George

He did a number of illegal things on that trip. While travelling around the country when he should have been isolating he was caught using his mobile phone while driving and tried to use his job to get out of it.

One judge accepted the flimsy partition defence but most don’t.

I’m sure the antis on telegram are organising a rally in support of their new hero.

The call to arms will go out among the 1 basement dweller with 300 different accounts. #EnoughIsEnough

‘I’m sure’ – Are you really though? Any proof for your claim? Malignant narcissists tend to be very ‘sure’ of themselves, but it never amounts to anything.

And the basement dweller with 300 telegram accounts has been revealed! #EnoughIsEnough #JusticeForPhil

Another factor with malignant narcissists is they tend to be oh so boring. Their delusions of grandeur lead them to believe their abuse is ‘scoring points’ – when in reality, they often just clown themselves repeatedly (as has been pointed out by many commenters here).

Carrying on Clowning with Doxxy Chainsaw….

“Their delusions of grandeur lead them to believe their abuse is ‘scoring points

Please tell me you wrote that in all seriousness with a straight face, because I’ve just broken my poo laughing at it.

          2. Doxxy Chainsaw

I’ve always been able to laugh at myself, something you probably couldn’t possibly comprehend from your basement with your telegram accounts.

Regardless of the law, attending this event while people couldn’t attend funerals was wrong.
Hogan and his cronies didn’t give a s**t about anyone but themselves.
Mind you, his entire career has been spend waving 2 fingers at the public.

    1. SOQ

Yes but just like the rest- he did not believe the scaremongering poo the rest of us was being bombarded with.

These are the sort of people who put themselves first, second and third after all.

I honestly don’t know what to make of this. I dislike both big Phil Hogan and the European Union political establishment. That being said, the man has a neck like a jockey’s bo**oks.
I don’t really see what case he would have, but who knows.
