Thank Fyodor it’s Friday.
With the Ukraine dominating the news, it’s time to ask: what’s your favourite piece of music from Eastern Europe?
Here’s mine.
It’s still a voucher-free zone but let’s be having you.
Please include video links if possible.
Lines close on Saturday at Midday.
Meanwhile…
Last week, after a suggestion from Liam Deliverance, I asked for your favourite piece of psychedelic music.
Unmutual won my esteem with this internationally trippy entry…
György Ligeti – Lux Aeterna
Unmutual writes:
“1960s ✔️
Drug induced? (written on morphine allegedly) ✔️✔️
Out there,… way out there! ✔️✔️✔️
A masterpiece in micropolyphony…”
Nick says: Well done, Unmutual and thanks all.

Arseny Avraamov – Symphony Of Factory Sirens (Public Event, Baku 1922)
… seems appropriate
Read more about him here – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arseny_Avraamov
Russian is great, Russian culture is fantastic…
Putin is a Crypto-Fascist- etc… etc… Naiz-esque Numpty.
I’m looking forward to his retirement party/coup against him at some point in the relatively near future…
No tea parties! There might be polonium in it.
The link to last weeks points to the 14th of Jan. Probably a copy and paste error.
Thanks, John, fixed now.
Ra-Ra-Ras-Putin…. honorary mention… Boney M
I love a LOT of Eastern European Music, from early 20th century Classical to Hungarian music of the 70’s, particularly Omega with their beautiful Girl with the pearl’s hair, later reused with different lyrics by Scorpions,

But for now, especially as a fan of Black Metal I reckon the Ukrainian Band Drudkh speak volumes…

Here’s a band that I first heard last year. They sold out Whelans last year.
Molchat Doma – Судно (Sudno) LIVE in St Petersburg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqlqzkLflro
They’re from Belarus – a real Joy Division / Cure type buzz of them.
Also the singer has a bang of the “Putins” off him ;-)
Awww
My entry disappeared
Micko, seriously?
It came back ;-)
I think there’s an issue with post with links or summit..
aw I was all curious about what had been a bridge too far
Micko, yes, an issue with certain links. Sorry. Glad it’s back.
Nae bother old boy
…often referred to by music heads as esatern europe’s,Sinatra.
if you’ve whiled away a sunny afternoon with a spliff on a patio or in a beer in Astoria, then the soothing tones of Karel Gott, will be familar, dobre:)

Verka Serduchka – Dancing Lasha Tumbai (Ukraine) 2007 Eurovision Song Contest
Is Czech Republic Eastern? This is a great 70’s rock tune. Used in an ad a few years ago:
Petr Novak – Knihovna

…probably my fav piece of eastern euro music is Nico’s,version of Femme Fatale, which is why i included a link to Sharon Von Etten’s,recent stunning slowed down, take.

Will this interesting gem do? It’s from the early 70’s has no lyrics yet it still has a singer. https://youtu.be/sTSA_sWGM44
Good stuff! It’s like a proto Alan Partridge-ovski
Заблеяло ми е агънце (Zablelyalo mi aguntz / A lambkin has commenced bleating) – Nadka Karadjova

Although formed in NY, Gogol Bordello are fronted by a Ukrainian, are clearly influenced by the eponymous Ukrainian writer, and there’s a very clear Eastern European flavour to their music. Check out Wanderlust King and solidarity to Ukraine

Got in there before me. Love Gogol Bordello. Good shout.
Second attempt posting this one, the first try earlier this afternoon maybe got thrown in a cell somewhere.
Варвара (Varvara) – Катюша (Katyusha)

“Dzelem, Dzelem” – a powerful performance by the wonderful Esma Redzepova of the Romani anthem – an emotional call to unity
My favourite music from Eastern Europe is Pazi Sta Radis by Wikluh Sky if Serbia. It’s the title tune for the forgettable A Serbian Film. I first heard it in a tiny coffee place where I live. It was playing on one of those big old fashioned ghetto blasters. The floor was vibrating. Best listened to on something with deep bass. It’s been my ringtone for years.

From one of my favourite films of all time – Amadeus- this piece reflects the cultural diversity of the Austrian Empire.
Political indoctrination, you either have it or you don’t……. (and not that I think it is a good way forward, generally speaking, with the caveat of Irish Republicanism :- )
As the west pays lip service to support Ukraine, they are agonizing over the gender neutral pronouns of the fighting force, and how to create non binary portacabins for the ablutions, the Red Army will march forward.
Doomed.

A haunting tune from the former Yugoslavia
Jadranka Stojakovic – Sto te nema (1981)

They don’t make videos like that any more – no, really
VIT Együttes – Bella ciao

Huzzah…!
Nice one Nick.
Some somber listening this week.
Henryk Górecki • Symphony No 3 – Lento e largo
Featuring, Joanna Koslowska • Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Koslowska’s restraint in her performance makes this particular rendition stand out from other recordings of this piece.

Aphrodite’s Child – The Four Horsemen (as in the Ford Kuga ad). 1972.

– Greece is also in Eastern Europe (it’s south of the Balkans)
Great tune. Been a fan for years. Surprise to me to hear it in a car advert.
I was really gutted when I found out the Demis Roussos (the lead singer aka the singing Kaftan) of “My Friend the Wind” & “Forever and Ever” fame was actually Egyptian. Abigail’s Party will never be the same again
Oscar winning composer Vangelis was in the band too
Ma Vlast (My Country) by Czech composer Smetana, is very patriotic.
