Win Nick’s Esteem [Extended]

at

Thank Fyodor it’s Friday.

With the Ukraine dominating the news, it’s time to ask: what’s your favourite piece of music from Eastern Europe?

Here’s mine.

It’s still a voucher-free zone but let’s be having you.

Please include video links if possible.

Lines close on Saturday at Midday.

Meanwhile…

Last week, after a suggestion from Liam Deliverance, I asked for your favourite piece of psychedelic music.

Unmutual won my esteem with this internationally trippy entry…

György Ligeti – Lux Aeterna

Unmutual writes:

“1960s ✔️

Drug induced? (written on morphine allegedly) ✔️✔️

Out there,… way out there! ✔️✔️✔️

A masterpiece in micropolyphony…”

Nick says: Well done, Unmutual and thanks all.

I love a LOT of Eastern European Music, from early 20th century Classical to Hungarian music of the 70’s, particularly Omega with their beautiful Girl with the pearl’s hair, later reused with different lyrics by Scorpions,

But for now, especially as a fan of Black Metal I reckon the Ukrainian Band Drudkh speak volumes…

Here’s a band that I first heard last year. They sold out Whelans last year.

Molchat Doma – Судно (Sudno) LIVE in St Petersburg

They’re from Belarus – a real Joy Division / Cure type buzz of them.

Also the singer has a bang of the “Putins” off him ;-)

…often referred to by music heads as esatern europe’s,Sinatra.
if you’ve whiled away a sunny afternoon with a spliff on a patio or in a beer in Astoria, then the soothing tones of Karel Gott, will be familar, dobre:)

Although formed in NY, Gogol Bordello are fronted by a Ukrainian, are clearly influenced by the eponymous Ukrainian writer, and there’s a very clear Eastern European flavour to their music. Check out Wanderlust King and solidarity to Ukraine

My favourite music from Eastern Europe is Pazi Sta Radis by Wikluh Sky if Serbia. It’s the title tune for the forgettable A Serbian Film. I first heard it in a tiny coffee place where I live. It was playing on one of those big old fashioned ghetto blasters. The floor was vibrating. Best listened to on something with deep bass. It’s been my ringtone for years.

Political indoctrination, you either have it or you don’t……. (and not that I think it is a good way forward, generally speaking, with the caveat of Irish Republicanism :- )

As the west pays lip service to support Ukraine, they are agonizing over the gender neutral pronouns of the fighting force, and how to create non binary portacabins for the ablutions, the Red Army will march forward.

    Doomed.

    Huzzah…!
    Nice one Nick.

    Some somber listening this week.

Henryk Górecki • Symphony No 3 – Lento e largo

Featuring, Joanna Koslowska • Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Koslowska’s restraint in her performance makes this particular rendition stand out from other recordings of this piece.

I was really gutted when I found out the Demis Roussos (the lead singer aka the singing Kaftan) of “My Friend the Wind” & “Forever and Ever” fame was actually Egyptian. Abigail’s Party will never be the same again
