You Grain Crisis

at

The Athgarvan Grain Mill, Blackrath, County Kildare

This morning.

Further to a call by Charlie McConalogue, Minister for Agriculture, for farmers to grow more grain due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine…

…via Irish Examiner:

the Irish Farmers’ Association said in a statement that there has “been no discussion with farmers” regarding reports that they may be required to grow crops in 2022.

“We are in very challenging times and farmers will certainly play our part in any national or European effort,” said IFA President Tim Cullinan.

However, it is far from certain that asking all farmers to plant crops is the best use of the resources that are likely to be available to us.”

To the pitchforks!

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

This is actually a good thing. Ireland’s agri sector is way too reliant on beef/dairy and crop growing has fallen by the wayside. The Department of Agriculture needs to get it’s ass in gear FAST- it is a no brainer.

Have the seeds bought and ready to roll. Don’t forget netting to keep the birds away

Every golf course in the country should be ploughed for wheat and all the land owned by the church, the developers and builders that’s lying fallow could be taken over and put to use also.

If your feeling nostalgic for the damp squib that was the Arab Spring – well the sequel MENA Summer is due to hit the screens soon. Recall the Arab Spring started as a bread riot in Tunisia – there be a few despots in the region scrambling for the susidies piggbank in vain shortly methinks. Egypt imports 100% of its wheat – almost all of it from totalitarian Russia. What will Basher do now without his “reassigned” Wagner chums. I not the chaps in ISIS haven’t gone away either – their ISIK franchise claimed responsibility for bombing a Shiite mosque in Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan. The attack killed at least 63 people and wounded nearly 200 others. May be a few nervous Aussie cricketers.

Much like the governments attitude to farming but now farmers are seen as important we cannot eat data or warm our homes with data centres
The penny now Is dropping regarding the fact we are an agriculture nation
Apparently we are the leading nation pop n this planet regarding food security

        1. Rob

I think it is quite apparent that we have no food security under our current model, if we need to significantly change it because of a war thousands of miles away.

        2. E'Matty

Our food security is brilliant, until our fuel supplies and fertiliser supplies run dry, and the electricity grid goes down. Despite that, we’re still better placed with our food supply and small population than most it has to be said.

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

Ireland is the world’s most “food-secure” nation, improving its food affordability, availability, quality and safety while the U.S. has stagnated, according to a copy of the sixth annual Global Food Security Index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit

          2. E'Matty

Yes Janet, I agreed. Though I point out that is based on current fuel and energy supplies.

the idea that we should have to do something about this is ridiculous it’s up to the EU, NATO and Russia to sort this out

Everything is by design; next will be some kill joy in the EU saying it is immoral to use our wheat and barley to make alcoholic beverages whilst people are starving.

Can you imagine a dire day in the near future when all the shelves are empty or the currency so debased it is 10 euro for a loaf of bread, if you can find or afford one?

That will be when they save us all with a central bank digital currency, which conveniently they can link to your old green pass as the tech is already there, great convenience.

Magic stuff, they can add a UBI payment to it as well to help us all out.

Only downside is all private property rights will need to be handed over to the BIS to bank roll the program, its only fair, we are all in this together….

After this government and the previous ones have run up a bill of 50k for every man, woman and child on the Island which is somewhat problematic to repay, a human bail in is what they will require for a life of indentured servitude.

A grim scenario, simply laid out, to get to the happy ending they want, “you will own nothing and be happy”
