Win Nick’s Esteem

at

Thank Feckula it’s Friday.

It’s that time of the week when the jets are cooled, chill pills are taken and the chamomile tea kicks in (Just as well as there’s still no voucher!)

This week I want to know what’s your favourite song about or mentioning a specific animal.

Here’s mine.

Please include video links if possible.

Lines close on Saturday at Midnight.

Last week I asked you to name your favourite song about the sun. Johnny “Diego” Keenan (him off the telly) won my esteem with this entry…

Bob Marley – Sun Is Shining (House remix)

Johnny writes:

“When I was Down Under in 1999, I went from night club to day club most Saturdays/ Sundays. Anyone who was around Sydney back then might remember Kings X clubbing finishing after The Beresford and the soul train to North Sydney was always one for the party troopers.

“This particular remix brought it all together, and I feel it brought on board another generation of Bob fans.

“Sun is shining, the weather is sweet. Makes you wanna move yer dancin feet”. Grrr Up!”

Nick says: Congratulations Johnny and thanks everyone for entering.

Early in the mornin’ I heard the call of the crow.
He said “C’mon now Brother, I want you to fly with me.
Can’t you see, it’s time to go?”

since hearing this tune – moons and moons ago.
Never look at a crow without straining to hear an invitation……still waiting?
Can’t actually fly, so the point is moot, nonetheless I listen.
The hooded crows, make me smile with their waist coats and gnarly smiles.
    Congratulations Johnny, shine bright.

Gil Scott Heron was a class act, I recommend his autobiography which I read recently enough.

Speaking of the crow your post reminded me of what Tom Waits (no stranger to crows in his lyrics) said about them which you’ve probably heard before anyway:

“I saw a crow building a nest, I was watching him very carefully, I was kind of stalking him and he was aware of it. And you know what they do when they become aware of someone stalking them when they build a nest, which is a very vulnerable place to be? They build a decoy nest. It’s just for you”

That is funny, I have been watching a young crow making serious efforts to gather sticks + twigs only this morning, I will wait for my nest patiently, it might be paving the way for my invite, maybe I can fly?

You’ve the bones of a half decent short story there Eamonn! Good luck with the crow stalking :)

My favourite song mentioning an animal is l’elephant by Tom Tom Club. I love this live performance. I’m Always fascinated by Frantz and Weymouth. They’re the most ‘ordinary’ rock stars. As side projects (side to Talking Heads) go Tom Tom Club is up there with the best.

    Diamond Dogs by Bow-wow-owie!

I wonder at times what he’d make of the last few years seeing as he was something of a maven, a prescient sort of chap. “The future is around the corner for those who can see it coming” he once said. Guess it depends on which street corner you’re standing, figuratively speaking.

Gem of a tune from a gem of an album. Forward looking in terms of its broad Orwell-esque /Clockwork Orange canvas. Off with him afterwards anyway and on to his next reinvention.

“Crawling down the alley on your hands and knees
I’m sure you’re not protected, for it’s plain to see
The diamond dogs are poachers and they hide behind trees
Hunt you to the ground they will, mannequins with kill appeal”

The Presidents of the United States of America have a number of animal related songs but my favourite is entitled Kitty.

It tells a story that spans millennia….
The late, great Terry Pratchett once wrote that ” In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this”.
The song perfectly encapsulates that complex relationship between humans and our feline companions, the highs and lows, the love given and the love spurned, the affection, the rejection, it’s all here in three minutes and 27 sec……

    Enjoy.

Nice one Micko. Always loved this tune over the panther. The music really played the cartoon, as opposed to the character.

Cat! We need you to rap!
    No!
    Cat! Etc.

Then a short while later …

.. you kiss your enemies like you know you should
Then you jerk your body like a horny pony would!
You jerk your body like a horny pony would!
Now run and tell your mama bout that!
And while you’re at it, tell your papa bout this!

I love to play this top blast when I need to!
The scene takes place on a mountain top: the music describes the arrival of a group of female warriors riding on horseback – these are the Valkyries who carry the bodies of fallen heroes to Valhalla, the home of the Gods.

    ‘Ben’ by Michael Jackson.

One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard about a friend.

Was disappointed in later years to find it wasn’t written by Jacko and it was about a pet rat. I was more sad than disappointed tbh.

The power of emotion the 13 year old put into it, it’s clear to see now how alienated he really was from the world and obviously abused by people around him.

For the record, Michael Jackson is innocent of all charges.
He was murdered by his record company. For asking to many questions. Same record company as Prince and George Michael.
