Curiously, the regions in contest prior to this year’s invasion were Ukraine only in an administrative sense.
Until the mid-1700s they formed part of the Crimean Khanate, so in fact IMO neither Russia nor Ukraine are entitled to them; but in so far as there is such a thing as a right via conquest (eg – OZ, NZ, USA, Canada) then surely Russia has a right to them if it wants them.
