Taking the selfie (above) is Ukrainian refugee Kateryna Pozniakov with her daughter Ilia (age 12), who fled from Kiev to Dublin after the Russian invasion. Along with Kateryna’s mother, they are living in a hotel in Dublin. This is the second time the family has been displaced, having fled from Lugansk to Kiev in 2014 when separatists seized governmental buildings in the region and proclaimed the Luhansk People’s Republic.

President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses the Finnish parliament this morning

This morning/afternoon.

Helsinki, Finland.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (without his friend) told Finland’s parliament  that a “sanction cocktail, that would be remembered just like Molotov cocktails” is needed to halt Russian aggression.

Zelensky asked Finland to “show even more leadership” in the European Union, saying this will be “the biggest contribution in the security of Europe.”

He said that Ukraine needs weapons “that some of the EU partners have,” as well as “powerful efficient sanctions against Russia on a permanent basis.”

Adding:

“We need to think about how to protect Europe from the Russian energy weapon. How much longer can Europe ignore the introduction of embargo against oil supplies from Russia?”

Kramatorsk railway station

This afternoon.

Via CNN:

The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement Friday calling the missile strike on a railway station in the Ukrainian city a “provocation.”

The statement mirrored recent denials of the indiscriminate killing of civilians in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha.

“All the statements of representatives of the Kyiv nationalist regime about the alleged ‘missile attack’ by Russia on April 8 at the railway station in Kramatorsk are a provocation and absolutely do not correspond to reality,” the statement said.

“On April 8, the Russian armed forces did not conduct or plan any artillery fires in the city of Kramatorsk.

“We emphasize that the Tochka-U tactical missiles, the wreckage of which was found near the Kramatorsk railway station and published by eyewitnesses, are used only by the Ukrainian armed forces.”

Ukrainian forces have the Soviet-designed Tochka missile in their inventory but it has also been used by Russian and separatist forces in the past.

He said:

“Please, I would like you to show more leadership in our anti-war coalition. I would like to ask you to convince EU partners to introduce more rigid sanctions against Russia to make sure the Russian war machine will stop.

“We have to put an end to trading with Russia. We have to cut ties of the Russian banks to the global system and cut the sources of their income from oil that they use for their weapons and killing,”

Via RTÉ News:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address a joint sitting of the Oireachtas this morning via video link.

TDs, Senators and 45 foreign diplomats will gather in the Dáil chamber to hear the historic address by Mr Zelensky, whose country has been repelling a Russian invasion for the past six weeks.

He is expected to speak for ten minutes, in an address which is likely to reference what he describes as war crimes in Bucha and other cities which were occupied by Russian forces.

He is also expected to mention his country’s application to join the European Union – something he wants addressed urgently, and which the Government supports.

It is unclear if he will mention his recent address to EU leaders, regarding their level of support for Ukraine – a speech in which he is reported to have said: “Ireland – well practically.

To the pitchforks.

Saturday.

Via Al Jazeera:

In a surprise appearance at the Doha Forum international conference, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensk called on energy-producing countries to step in so that Moscow cannot use its oil and gas wealth to “blackmail” other nations.

Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom has said it is continuing to supply natural gas to Europe via Ukraine in line with requests from European consumers.

On Friday, EU leaders ‘promised’ to end the bloc’s dependence on Russian energy.

Russia supplies nearly 40% of the European Union’s natural gas and over 25% of the region’s crude oil. Although the global oil cartel known as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other non-OPEC oil-exporting nations played down concerns of a global oil shortage as the war drags on, many industry players fear a potential demand destruction that could cause oil demand to peak and fall when pump prices become too expensive.

To reinstate the balance in oil supply and demand especially during wintertime in Europe, EU-based importers of Russian oil could then choose to yield to Putin’s demands and pay in rubles.

However, EU leaders, shortly after Putin’s announcement, stood firm and rejected the Kremlin’s demands, with Slovenia Prime Minister Janez Jansa saying “nobody will pay in rubles,” Bloomberg News reported. The message was backed by leaders of Ireland, Italy, Croatia, and Germany, among others, ahead of a summit meeting in Brussels. The leaders stressed that Putin’s demand would be in violation of their existing contracts.

“Lithuania, for us. Latvia is for us. Estonia is for us. Poland is for us.

“France, Emmanuel [Macron], I really believe that you will be for us. Slovenia is for us. Slovakia, for us. The Czech Republic is for us. Romania knows what dignity is, so it will be for us at the crucial moment. Bulgaria is for us. Greece, I believe that with us. Germany (…) I’m a little later. Portugal — well, practically (…) Croatia, for us. Sweden, blue and yellow should always be together. Finland, I know you are with us. The Netherlands is rational, so let’s find a common language.

“Malta, I believe it will succeed. Denmark, I believe it will succeed. Luxembourg, we understand each other. Cyprus, I really believe that with us. Italy, thank you for your support! Spain, find a common language. Belgium, we will find arguments. Austria, together with the Ukrainians, these are opportunities for you. I’m sure of it. Ireland, well, practically.”

Arriving on the second day of the summit the Taoiseach was asked if Ireland had been “singled out” as falling short in its support.

He told reporters: “That wouldn’t have been my read of it. He was actually talking in terms of the European perspective … I wouldn’t have taken the same slant that some may be taking from it.”

Asked if Mr Zelensky’s comments could be interpreted as meaning that he believed Ireland’s support to be less intense than other countries, Mr Martin said: “I think that’s reading too much into it if I’m honest.”

“Obviously we’re a military neutral country but we explained that we facilitated the EU peace facility which has been of enormous support to the Ukrainian people,” Mr Martin said.

“Right now, when we need you right now, remember Pearl Harbour. The terrible morning of December 7 1941 when your skies were black from the planes attacking. You remember it

“September 11 – a terrible day in 2001 when evil tried to turn your cities, independent territories in battleground, when innocent people were attacked from air.

“Yes, just like nobody else expected it. You could not stop it.
