A Bog’s Notion

at

This morning.

Dublin Castle, Dublin 2.

The Minister for the Environment and Climate Action Eamon Ryan arrives for cabinet following his disclosure yesterday that  turf-selling will be banned from September 1.

Mr Ryan said that families would still be allowed to cut peat from traditional plots for domestic use but selling the peat will be prohibited.

he told the dail:

“This approach will facilitate those with turbary rights to continue to cut and burn sod peat for their own domestic purposes, while also reducing the use of sod peat in urban areas,”

And he never mentioned about all that foreign imported turf that will be taking up the slack
Like starter logs and briquettes from Germany Holland or even Russia as there is no mention of it in the sanction list
Ryan really needs to get on his bike

He’s not known for joined up thinking.
Let’s assume it costs as much in terms of carbon to produce peat briquettes abroad as it does here; then there is the cost of transporting them from Europe to Ireland.
Plus the fact that Irish people will be put out of work in order to employ people abroad, while we pick up the slack by paying their dole.

Something doesn’t add up; no, nothing adds up – it’s almost as though he doesn’t care.
He’s just a typical “I’m all right Jack” IMO.

I get he’s a pain in the butt and comes out with stupid stuff…but this makes sense, it’s a dirty fuel, and bogs sequester a lot of carbon. Planned very badly, going by comments online they haven’t accounted for those dependent on turf form sellers, should these people not get a subsidy to move them off turf? Also turf stoves cant burn the likes of coal as it burns too hot….supposedly

      What makes sense?
Using turbary rights (from 1947) which are so old that no one alive can possibly still have them, or have the physical strength to actually cut turf?
Banning the donation of turf to a neighbour, then not banning it, then not mentioning it?
Importing thousands of tonnes of peat?
Referring to Russia as the Soviet Union, realising your mistake and referring to Russia as the USSR?
      Falling asleep in work?
Claiming expenses to drive to work even though you cycle?
Promoting car pooling in rural Ireland, then denying that you promoted car pooling in rural Ireland?
Promoting electric cars who’s battery components are mined by children and are destroying the environment?
Proceeding with a small rise in the cost of energy to promote less usage at a time when energy costs are up over 30%?

The man is more than a pain in the butt, he is not fit for public office.
But…. silver lining………….he’s single handedly killing the Green party so keep him as leader please.

I don’t understand why coal is not banned outright in the country. There is no such thing as ‘smokeless’ coal. I live in a town where you can’t leave the house in the evenings for about 6 months of the year because of idiots burning rotten coal.

If coal was banned many Irish would not be able to heat their homes
So that means those without access to 60 grand in cash would find it impossible to even qualify for a grant for heat pumps and money laid out while waiting for the grant
Them n of course the years waiting for someone to do the job
    That is reality

There is only one solution to deal with his dogmatic and senseless peat restrictions and regulations.
Ignore them, carry on as normal.
Who is going to enforce them? They are so poorly drafted and make no sense, clearly they are designed to pander to the green brigade.

Plans to ban sale of turf from September have been paused, Leo Varadkar tells Fine Gael TDs

“Plans to ban the sale of turf from September have been paused, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has told his parliamentary party. Mr Varadkar announced the pause on the same day Environment Minister Eamon Ryan robustly defended the plan to bring in the ban later this year, arguing that the pollution from burning turf is “killing people”. News of the impending ban has sparked a backlash from rural-based backbenchers in Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.

In an online meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr Varadkar is said to have told TDs and senators that telling those who cut and sell turf that they could no longer do so was “like telling the French they can’t have wine or the Italians they can’t have pasta”. Sources said he told party colleagues there will be a pause on the plan on that until the details are clearer. He did not provide any indication of how long the pause would be in place. Mr Ryan’s spokespersons could not immediately be reached for comment…”

Varadkar on collision course with Greens after he tells Fine Gael TDs plans to ban sale of turf have been paused

“…The coalition is now at odds after a spokesperson for Mr Ryan denied there is any pause in the plan. They said: “Minister Ryan agreed to engage on how the regulations would be implemented but there was no agreement on a pause.”…”

OK, now I understand – there never was a famine at all, all those people died because they were burning turf in their homes.

Don’t things become terribly clear when they are properly explained?
