This morning.
Via RTÉ News:
The Cabinet will hear this morning that more than 22,000 people from Ukraine have arrived here since 25 February.
So far, 14,155 people have sought accommodation from State services.
Efforts are being stepped up to process the offers of accommodation pledged by the public.
So far, only about half of those who offered accommodation are answering these calls.
Defence Forces personnel are contacting more than 1,200 property owners every day as they work through the 24,000 or so pledges of accommodation.
Meanwhile…
It is now likely that camp beds in community halls will be used in the next few days to accommodate people.

No-one in charge, no plans
The usual ffg and loony gp mismanagement
And tent cities for them
I believe a new bill is proposed to get hold of property owned by people in nursing homes.
So now state seizes the homes people owned who paid for them and worked to acquire them
And when they die can you imagine the problem their children will face evicting those who are living in them
And then the question of insurance just in case the tenant sues and damages the property
And if renting one must have landlords insurance
We are supposed to take 200 thousand refugees of non EU status and suck it up
Just wait now for the budget and the tax increases needed to fund this
I heard recently of a guy down the country who leased an unused public building shortly before Ukraine kicked off, ostensibly to turn it into a tourist hostel.
It is really in the middle of nowhere, but now, lo and behold, it’s full of Ukranians.
Didn’t he have great foresight?
maybe if the people with houses attack the houseless on the streets of Ireland, the government will make an effort to fix the problem, instead of leaving them to the generosity of the evening soup run groups. why does a Ukrainian matter more than a homeless person from Mayo living rough in Dublin.
The EU is telling our government to do so
For one Ukraine is not part of the EU and not our responsibility
Like Syria Iraq Afghanistan Yemen ,but these people who are suffering worse get no sympathy or anything more than a tent in a UN camp of squalor
Our people come first and we walk over them every day and those who are not on the streets are packed in like sardines in hubs and hotels and every day their mental health suffer
But let’s face it the Irish government care nothing about our people
And if you think the lefties will be much better
If they get in every red cent will flow out of this country
For fear of the racist label nobody seems to be countering the arrival of the Ukranian community (needy and in fear of their lives ) with the wholesale failure of the Govt to address the homelessness issues in Ireland.
Is it because the homless are seen to be feckless and lazy and the Ukranians are homeless through no fault of their own or is it to look good to the EU? Needless to say the numbers agreeed on were very high to begin with and I think will provide another set of issues for the Govt who seem to be incapable of organising anything.
People who call the homeless and the unemployed ‘feckless’ are given a platform on the public media to spread their hate.
Basically this is Groundhog Day from the last Cabinet meeting and the Government is still clearly clueless as to what they propose to do with between 100,000-200,000 refugees for an extended period.
The Ukraine war could last months if not years and even at this early stage it’s down to squaddies ringing around trying to contact people who’ve obviously had second thoughts.
Meanwhile 600 more Ukrainians will arrive today.
And tomorrow.
And the next day.
That freight train heading to Disaster Junction is really beginning to pick up speed now.
I am totally anti EU
It’s another empire or reich and Ireland needs to get out fast
There is a world outside the EU and our fishing grounds alone are worth a fortune and instead of us getting 5% of our own fish as our partners get 95% we can do a hell of a lot better
The big problem is being part of the EURO and by leaving our currency the old punt would ensure massive interest rate rises
A CRASH IS COMING SO MAYBE IT MIGHT BE A GOOD TIME TO DO IT NOW AND ALSO BEING OUT OF THE EU MIGHT MAKE BREXIT LESS OF A POLITICAL NIGHTMARE AS WE ARE USED AS A BATTERING RAM TO PUNISH THE UK FOR LEAVING
saying that this will go down like a pork chop in a mosque in Republican circles
never go full David Dinkum
I don’t have a lot of time for the EU; and I do recognise that the map of the EU is quite similar to the 3rd Reich and its allies at the height of WW II.
Nevertheless, if we left we would be immediately at the mercy of GB once again. And just look how that worked out for us in the past.
most people have realised they cannot host an extra person or two in their home for an indefinite period of time – especially with increasing fuel energy food costs etc
it’s hard enough to live with people you love
I think a lot of folks thought it would be for a few weeks.
Who knows how long it will be now.
Actually, has anyone here volunteered (or know someone) to host a family? Would be interested to know the ins and outs of it.
I was reading a post yesterday from an American tourist who had her long-standing booking at an Irish hotel cancelled this week – and the hotel is not accepting any more reservations.
If the country’s B&Bs, hotels and holiday rentals are filling up with refugees where do the millions of tourists who visit every year stay ?
I know of one holiday rental in remote rural Galway that has had a homeless Irish family housed in it for more than a year – they have no hope of finding proper accomodation.
The hotels themselves will be fine, govt is picking up the tab.
But tourists businesses dependent on tourist trade, they will suffer hugely as tourists will struggle to find anywhere to stay and ultimately just not come!
just as they get reopened, a lovely fupp you from the government
One of the repercussions of the out of control property market is that people are more tightly condensed that ever before. Young people are not leaving the family nest like they used to and because of the crazy rents / mortgages, people living in apartments do not have spare rooms.
Not forgetting that no one has a clue they are
In all fairness the fact they are refugees is terrible but what about our own
This is governments problem as we have a property crises and the sheer number they are expecting us to take is 5% of our population and all the pressure in health education and psychological matters
We do not even have one child psychologist for the Wexford area a million on waiting lists and a health system close to collapse as no one wants to work for the HSE as they are treated like slaves
The government has committed us to 200 thousand and that equates to 7 million for Germany
This is all about our leaders ego’s and akin to a drunk in a pub flashing his cash as his kids at home go hungry
This government is doing everything in its power to make sure it won’t be re-elected in 2025.
What’s the chances it will declare a state of emergency shortly before the elections are due, and put them off permanently?
I have a few questions-
Is the ratio of Ukrainians to overall population coming here higher than elsewhere? If so why?
Were they invited, and if so by whom?
…asking as a arriviste.
Hanlon’s razor states “never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
Perhaps the system was designed and run by idiotic bureaucrats/civil servants who ran it into the ground. The people who pledged to take on refugees had to provide little evidence that they owned the properties in question and have the means to take care of them. Very often you had to gooder bleeding hearts children volunteering extra rooms in their parents house without their knowledge.
However, there is a part of me that thinks this chaos is being created on purpose. Problem, reaction, solution. Perhaps the inevitable crisis caused by all these refugees (who are not all Ukrainian by the way) will be used to justify the taking of property rights from people in the future. The government would not get away with doing it otherwise.
When I was filling out the census I was amazed by the numerous deliberate questions related to my property. They weren’t for nothing.
I am being objective and don’t wish to come across as heartless. A lot of these people having escaped a war zone and need a lot more than just accommodation. Some are totally shellshocked and require severe medical attention. Do they think elderly people can cope with this?? Was that factored into all of the governments thinking?
“ will be used to justify the taking of property rights from people in the future.”
I’ve heard a couple of people saying similar online.
Thankfully, I don’t think any politician would bring that in, as they, their families and wealthy folks would be affected by it too.
Sure they won’t even bring in rent controls as half of the gits are landlords. ;-)
aye, I can’t see that self serving shower going for the you’ll own nothing and be happy badge
Phew high level stuff there
Have you read Naomi Klein’s book “Shock Doctrine”?
This is Shock Doctrine Mark II.
it’s almost as if some chancers thought they’d get a free leggy blond live in maid and then realised that’s not it
what’s with the photo, supposed to be your typical Ukrainian family are they ?
Yeah we talked about that before- weird isn’t it? Then again the first refugees into Donegal were not exactly what was expected either. Not that I blame those people for wanting to get out of Ukraine, even at the best of times.
Also a video doing the rounds of a group of Indians being interviewed- except as pointed out by an Indian friend, they were Pakistani not Indian, which as you know is the Asian variation of the Prod- Fenian thing- definately not Ukrainian either way. All men, 25 – 50.
I suppose so except the women who look like the fact they are wearing the is
Amic head covering are very moderate Islamic
It’s a wonder a baby was not in the photo as well to get the heart strings and gilt going into overdrive if you think against the narrative
How waacist of you Janet
to question the indigenous make up of our new arrivals, and state the blatantly obvious lol.

I thought the Ukrainians were mostly Christian or similar?
So did I but it’s a stock photo and lazy work by the Red Cross that they did not check that not all refugees are fleeing Assad much like the so called numbers of accommodation offered
Maybe this is why it’s been a disaster
In the coming months I doubt Irish tolerance will be welcoming when we see Red Cross tents around the country
I say that because we have an impossible housing crises the result of successive government failure
I advise sin Fein to make sure they do not win the next election because they will be left to solve the unsolvable situation especially with 200 thousand refugees we are going to take
Thousands of refugees to be housed in tent camps from next Monday as half of accommodation pledges fall through

People who reneged on promises are flakes of the highest order & I feel nothing but contempt. My brother & his family have two Ukrainians staying with them, elderly lady (70s) & her daughter who is mid-40s. Nice people, the mother has cooked a few dishes for the family, seriously tasty.
