Yesterday.
Ahead of this weekend’s voting, President Emmanuel Macron and rival Marine Le Pen held an acrimonious telly debate where they clashed over relations with Russia, the Islamic headscarf and the jab.
Via France 24:
The most explosive clash came when Le Pen confirmed she was sticking to her controversial policy of banning the wearing of the Islamic headscarf by women in public, describing it as a “uniform imposed by Islamists”.
Macron responded: “You are going to cause a civil war if you do that. I say this sincerely.”
She also vowed to put an end to “anarchic and massive” immigration into France, claiming it was worsening crime which she said was becoming “unbearable” for people all over the country.

Fight!

It is not how many votes you get, but WHO counts the vote. They will never let her win. The WEF would never allow it
Macron is a sociopath. Macron’s life’s path is very off-the-curve for a politician. He will get elected, there will be many abstentions, considering voting is being held the first weekend of school vacation.
Marine LePen is a woman who has had children and led a sort of normal way of life.
If she did win, she would, in any case have very little power in the Senate to change anything.
The boat has already left the port!
What has become obvious during the whole pandemic is that many politicians are actually not democrats. When the opportunity arose, they turned into complete tyrants with no respect for the law, let alone the electorate.
Macron’s behaviour during that period was disgraceful.
Very interesting if le pen wins and I would put my money on it

Serge Gainsbourg a true great
Another is Charles Aznavour
I find it fascinating that the headscarf/hijab debate is still an ongoing one in French politics.
same here. I figured it had been broken down into ‘as long as it’s not obscuring your identity’ and ‘as long as it’s not being done against the persons will’ then there’s not much else to be done. Everything after that is getting into grey areas around personal choice, family pressure, cultural pressure etc.
It’s more about being seen to counter the more radical elements of Islam in France, they have more and more trouble with 2nd and 3rd gen immigrants becoming radicalised and growing up in Muslim ghettos. Should never have let it get this far in the first place, but now they want/need a desperate push toward integration/secularism in public.
Won’t work though, France is too far gone. Teachers being beheaded for allegedly speaking ill of Muhammad, massacres in theatres in Paris, Truck attacks in Nice. Islamic terrorism is part and parcel of living in a French city unforunately.
If the only thing they have to offer against the spread of radical islam is banning the hijab, they’re worse than useless, they’re actively trying to help it spread.
I agree, it’s just shaking a hornets nest, a ridiculous proposition
Well we all know the candidate Bodger and his tankies will weigh in behind…
Hint – the alt-right, fascist, racist one.
Theatre..
Tick tock Cloutier and French FL muppets..
What next – the turban or the yarmulke?
Hold your nose and vote Marcon.
They’re both stooges.
Exactly. Western populations have repeatedly been offered the South Park false choice between a douche and a turd sandwich in every major election. All sides are controlled and the general quality of the political class is a deliberate attempt to delegitimise democracy. We’re to beg for technocratic rule. Rule by “experts” driven by data.
What we are looking at here is a choice between globalism and nationalism- both of which are right wing- and it is pretty obvious which side the media is on. But France has a very strong nationalistic tradition and pride in it’s culture, which has been tested by the high levels of Muslim immigration.
Platitudes about multiculturalism don’t wash when for fear of unwanted attention, in certain areas you cannot wear red lipstick, and you can forget about that short skirt. Likewise the gays- just move out. And there is most definately a class element, because immigrants do not reside in affluent areas.
Time will tell but I think this race is going to be a lot closer than predicted.
“What we are looking at here” is the choice between one pile of setpic garbage and another. It’s Hobsons.
The quality of candidate in France, the UK, here, the US… and so on is pretty rancid when you get down to those who actually have a chance of getting elected, the decent people seem to be outliers.
Hope lies in the proles etc.
Gossamer thin hope given the type of punter groomed for political life. Sadly political success tends to corrupt once in power. As a standard and not unreasonable expectation we can hope for a lid to be kept on things. At best pin hopes on the adage “cometh the hour, cometh the man or woman.”
it is almost like good fascist/bad fascist, except only one of the two is proud of the tag, the other loves a little authoritarianisn but wouldn’t fly the flag so proudly.
.
bon chance la france.
Le Pen should be in jail not debating to be president
Right, alt-right, left, far left. These contrived labels are phoney. The ‘left’ has not been so in the traditional sense for decades, it vanished in the west upon the rise of neo-liberalism. Blair in the UK subverted Labour to the point that Tory and Labour, Right and Left are one and the same. The same in the states where the Democrats now exibit the same tendancies as the Republicans have done in the past, and oddly the Republicans are suddenly the caring sharing party. The fantasy that there is opposing sides or that there is a left and right is there to divide people over nothing. Social media amplifies these supposed differences. Media has been fully coopted into this scam. Divide and konker.
A Le Pen win wouldn’t change much, the Globalists have an iron grip on the media, both Legacy & Social & people have been lulled by decades of paternalistic but benign post-War governments & remain mostly unaware that the goalposts have moved.
On the other hand, watching the complete meltdown it would cause across the Ruling Elites in Brussels, across the globe & even among the libtards of Broadsheet would be beyond entertaining. If many of the younger Far Left are unmotivated to bother turning up to vote for Macron, who the French public basically regard as a weirdo (correctly), it will be very close.
Macron & his government have held back details of further planned sanctions against Russia, which will utterly destroy the economy, so even a close contest will force Macron to redouble his efforts to handle that conflict the way Europe, a toothless, defenceless continent, would’ve done, if they weren’t so controlled by the warmongers in Washington.
There is no advantage to the EU to have NATO nuclear missiles in Ukraine, had that fact been acknowledged from the off, there wouldn’t have been any invasion but the EU leadership, which never has to face any scrutiny at the ballot box or in the media, are being exposed by real world geopolitics as hugely incompetent.
If we lived in a Democratic Europe we could, of course, vote them out but alas, those days are long gone.
