*screech*
This morning.
Via Dublin City Council:
We have today launched a new tool for members of the public to rate traffic signals in the city.
‘Rate My Signals‘ is a new web map tool that allows road users to provide feedback on their experience of the traffic signals they come in contact with as part of their daily commute and travel through the city.
The Traffic Control team in DCC’s Civics office will use the analytics generated from the feedback to improve how they operate the City’s traffic signals.
Finally.

The signals are OK but I think a more inclusive colour arrangement on the lights would be a good way to represent Ireland’s increasingly diverse society. Maybe add a purple one?
how about a calming blue light strobing gently to encourage calm breathing? Once lit, it remains lit until everyone chills the f ck out.
or a rapidly flashing red light so that if someone enters the yellow box without the other side being clear, they can be pulled from their car and made to promise that they’ll never do it again.
Eh? While in control of a motor vehicle? Another hair-brained Keegan idea. Hughie Luas’ comment above could be accurate given Keegan’s penchant for designing useless road signs that were produced, then removed.
What does the Road Safety people think about drivers using a phone app while in traffic? What do the Gardai think?
Yet another stitch up by the useless corpo. Let me guess: the ‘findings’ will say that a large majority will favour more lights and more measures to restrict cars and favour bikes.
favor bikes….and pedestrians..they use the traffic lights as well.
No. Not while driving. What sort of idiot would immediately think that?
This is open to lots of people, not just drivers.
It is there for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users, etc.
lol
Who mentioned ‘Driving’ Cian? I mentioned ‘In control of a car’, and ‘while in traffic’
What sort of an idiot would think that drivers will go home after passing through many traffic lights during the day, and especially in Dublin City driving to fill out an app? with comments? You?
‘‘Rate My Signals‘ is a new web map tool that allows road users to provide feedback on their experience of the traffic signals they come in contact with as part of their daily commute and travel through the city.”
Are controllers of motor vehicles not road users then?
The road users is a bit misleading but come on other people use the traffic lights that aren’t in cars. I’ve filled it out and I drive but I also walk and cycle, its not all about motorists
No – it isn’t. But motorists are a big part of it. My point is that motorists won’t fill this out at home after driving through many lights (there are nearly 900 sets of traffic light in Dublin). And humans being what they are, if they are inclined to fill it out, it will be while they are sitting in traffic at traffic lights.
If motorists aren’t bothered to fill out the survey safely once they get home, one can only draw the conclusion that they are satisfied with the status quo.
Why anyone would immediately jump to the conclusion that they should fill it in while driving is beyond stupid.
Motorists do indeed drive through many traffic lights but I expect that there are probably only a small subset that are troublesome. If they have issues with all of the traffic lights then I’m afraid the problem may not be the traffic lights….
No one said they ‘should’ fill it out ‘while driving’. Writing such drivel to suit your rant is beyond stupid don’t you think?
Imagine being so myopic as to think that motorists are the only people who interact with traffic signals…
Imagine being so stupid as to think a comment about drivers, is a comment encompasses all interested parties.
Maybe we should have a ‘Rate My Troll’ version here.
They even provided loads of photos of pedestrian crossings in the banner to help you out – c’mon Giggidy, they are trying to meet you half-way here.
As I say – ‘Imagine being so stupid as to think a comment about drivers, is a comment that encompasses all interested parties.’
How about rate my bollards, the place has been carpet-bombed with them?
teehee
that reads very naughty
She was merely assessing my bollard
During which I orgasmically hollered.
Then her husband arrived
And I could have died
In flagrante we both had been collared.
Personally, I think it’s quite useful, there are some traffic signals that leave you standing in the rain and cold far too long, while cars fly by, soaking anyone within spitting distance. Also, some crossings don’t provide enough time for the elderly or mobility impaired to cross in time and others leave you stranded on a few feet of concrete waiting for the next signal change…. it’s not all about getting cars from A to B as quickly as possible.
How many replies do you think will be submitted through this app. Say it’s 5000 – do you really think that 5000 comments will be read, and understood. The app, to be any way useful and quick to identify problem areas, should have a drop-down choice of complaints (and compliments so that the likes of Cian is catered for) that can be sorted into importance quickly. Without it, you may as well be filling in the time capsule part of the census for all the consideration a 200 character comment, complete with abbreviations, attempted emojis etc, that will be given to it.
7,000 responded to the survey on capel street so if they got 5000 for this it would be good going, most surveys get nowhere near this and are an only small part of overall user research, i assume they are read, why ask otherwise. Id agree its usability could be improved but I thought it was ok and easy to fill out and I’m glad to see they are aware and thinking about it.
You should work for DCC.
What a great idea, to have dropdown with a list of complaints/complements. Amazing. You are like a genius. Nobody else could have come with such a stupendous idea.
Guess what? If you click on the link (it’s a website, not an app) that is exactly what you can do.
Amazing how he managed to launch into two tirades already before even figuring out what format the thing he is complaining about is…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You must be new to broadsheet!
So what choices has it given as regards complaints? has it, for instance such things as:
‘No Traffic Lights required Traffic is being stopped/slowed without reason. A Roundabout would be more efficient’
‘Traffic Lights here are confusing’
‘As a cyclist, lights don’t turn green unless there’s a car beside/behind me’ (Sensors)
Instead of…
‘Signals work great’
‘I find improvements made to signals are average’ (Define average)
‘Pedestrian Crossing running with no pedestrians’
Or maybe the SCATS system isn’t up to the job?
