Praveen Halappanavar and his late wife, Savita
Galway Independent writes:
A vigil for Savita Halappanavar will take place in Eyre Square today, on the second anniversary of the 31-year-old dentist’s death at University Hospital Galway. The memorial will take place in front of the Browne Doorway, where photographs of Savita will be on display. From noon, members of the public are invited to leave their thoughts on Savita in the form of written messages. Galway Pro-Choice will collect these messages and present them to Savita’s family and friends. The public are also free to leave flowers at the site. At 6pm, there will be a candlelit vigil, to which everybody who wishes to commemorate Savita is welcome.
Meanwhile…
Activists, including Nell McCafferty, centre, arriving in Dublin from Belfast in 1971
A number of pro choice activists will travel from Connolly Station in Dublin today to Belfast, in order to bring abortion pills back to Dublin with them. Abortion pills are banned in Ireland.
They will arrive back at Connolly Station at 2.30pm.
The action recalls how members of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement took the Contraception Train, from Dublin to Belfast, in 1971 to bring back condoms and the Pill, which were illegal in the Republic of Ireland at the time.

WTF?? Exploiting the death of a woman for your Pro-Abortion on Demand campaign?
Stay classy.
Is there a fog horn going off in Youth Defence HQ or something? Calm down dear.
ah yeah. Anyone who balks at this is in youth defense. (YD are scum, this crown aren’t much better)
Indeed dear. And you will readily appreciate that not all of those who support abortion rights are in favour of “pro-abortion on demand” access without time limits. A hint. Try being less extremist and reactionary if you don’t want to be seen as a, well, extremist.
What’s with the “dear” stuff, Jord? It makes you sound like a terrible asshole.
Do you think the Dear makes you tough? Or masculine?
I reckon you have a very small willy
i bet your wife has the willy in your house
Oh come on. Now you both sound like assholes.
abortion would have been too good for your likes
2years. is it really 2 years already.
I thought Praveen Halappanavar asked for his wife’s death not to be used by the pro-choice campaign?
Not sure about this. You might recall that he certainly didn’t hold back venting about Ireland’s abortion laws. No to mention the chilling fact that the consultant obstetrician at the inquest admittedly difficulty in interpreting these laws.
The vast majority of the electorate would have supported a termination in Savita’s case; the lobby mentioned above want to go waaaay beyond.
It’s dishonest to put her husband in their camp
Indeed but you fail to appreciate the majority who use language like you did namely “pro-abortion on demand campaigners”, are not interested in rational debate or medical reality but to smear all those in favour of safe, accessible and limited abortion with time limits as baby killers who would think nothing of aborting a healthy second or third trimester foetus. There are far more valid, honest and less alarmist and reactionary ways of making your point.
I think that which most Irish people are in favour of in terms of abortion, is legislation which is clear, unambiguous and medically sound so that perhaps even a consultant obstetrician might have no doubts as to its interpretation. Sadly this is not currently the case and unlikely to be for the foreseeable future.
spuc off niamh
As he worked quite a bit with Galway Pro-choice when this happened I’d say you’re quite wrong there.
I recall that too. By all means protest etc but stop throwing it back in the poor guys face.
Wow. People are disgusting. Let her rest in peace nd stop hauling her out to make a point. Its almost worse than Enda Kenny slobbering over Mairia Cahill. The insincerity stinks.
Wow. “Enda Kenny slobbering over Mairia Cahill”. She’s like those pesky McCartney sisters trying every avenue to get justice for their brother when faced with the Shinner hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil credo. Maybe you might want to ask Mairia whether Enda “slobbered” over her. Moron.
It was top class slobbering. You’re the moron if you think that she wasn’t exploited over and over again last week. There are plenty of rape victims to have private meetings with if enda wants them. Maybe just not such a good photo op when the shinners are at your polls.
Yawn. We have heard this ad nauseum from the Shinner brigade last week. Care to ask Mairia Cahill who she feels exploited by? Most rape victims aren’t usually subjected to the most appalling hypocrisy by an entire so-called political party enmeshed in the whole affair. What are you going to post next – “times were different back then” I suppose. Grow up. Mairia Cahill is simply trying every avenue to secure some justice for herself. Lots of victims publicly meet with political leaders to ventilate their experiences and seek vindication. It would certainly suit Sinn Fein if she shut her mouth and kept it all behind closed doors as it would have suited the anti-abortion extremists had Praveen quietly accepted his wife’s medical “treatment”.
You love your poster girl victims don’t you. It’s all about the photo op.
Of course your right. Silly me. Does moronic you believe Mairia Cahill is doing it for the photo ops? “Poster girl victims” – I’ll add that to the Shinner speak lexicon. Your paltry reply is rather revealing. Once again, who do you really think Mairia Cahill was exploited by?
She’s no victim. She’s a survivor and fair f*cks to her.
She is indeed a “survivor” but then you go on to opine that she is “exploiting Enda’s political aims”. Of course she is. Jesus.
You’re not doing yourself any favours here Bluebeard by seemingly following the Sinn Fein line. Maria Cahill strikes me as a strong and determined woman and I’m not sure she sees it the same way you do. Sinn Fein very much approved of the “photo ops” when it was to do with the survivors of clerical abuse, industrial schools, the symphisiotomy women etc. yet when it comes to the inconvenient truth of Maria Cahill, suddenly she’s being exploited and a “poster girl victim”. That’s just a bit too easy and smacks of victim shaming as opposed to any real concern.
You’re the moron if you think she didn’t know exactly what she was doing when she came forward about this. She’s not an infant, she agreed to those meetings, she did interviews, she talked to the press.
She’s not a puppet, she’s her own woman and saying otherwise is to grossly underestimate her. If you’re going to talk exploitation I’d say she’s exploiting Enda’s political aims in order to get this issue addressed.
Of course she is trying to get the issue addressed you idiot. Like the McCartney sisters, she is trying everything to get some sense of justice and expose the hypocrisy of Sinn Fein. Of course she agreed to the meetings as opposed to the Kangaroo courts set up by Sinn Fein. It is your subtle implication of nefariousness which I find appalling – now we have the situation where she is being both exploited as per Bluebeard and exploiting the political landscape as per your good self. Such luminaries. Maybe she just wants, as you say, the issue addressed and the truth to be told? Too much to handle for you?
I love the bind that puts her in. Keep it quiet and be ignored. Court publicity in an effort to get something done or even noticed, and she’s being exploited. Lovely.
I support this , not sure about actually taking them when you don’t need them though, just bringing them into the country should make the point.
I just wish i could see the impotent rage that must be going on at youth defence hq right now.
Is it exploitative to speak of someone who died by suicide when asking for better funding for mental health services?
2 years already. Very very sad altogether.
