Yesterday.
Luas and Dublin Bus passengers in Dublin city centre…
….as outgoing Minister for Transport Shane Ross warned:.
“We are going to get to a situation in the next few weeks where it’s close to bursting and where there’s not enough capacity on public transport.
“We’ve increased the capacity to 50% which will mean a lot more people can get on the buses and the trains but to match that, to protect people’s health, we’ve made mandatory face masks so everybody getting on to public transport in the next few weeks or days, they’ll have to wear a face mask.”
And good luck with that.

I’d imagine there’ll be those that cannot afford €40 / month on masks….
Approx. €5 per pack of five disposable masks.
5 days a week, 2 trips per day, 4 weeks per month….
Just a thought. Anyone…
And some people cannot wear a mask- anxiety disorders and respiratory conditions for example. It cannot be up to a transport employee to be making that call- they have no medical training.
But it goes further. There are already reports from elsewhere of older people passing out and falling- who is liable if someone is seriously injured?
Above all- if masks are so effective then why is infection rates in China and South Korea on the rise again?
Well considering the enormous populations of those countries, especially in their cities, they are still doing well containing it.
The spikes are happening because workers from other states or counties are coming back to work. If they are 20 to 35 years old, they mostly have no symptoms, but their workplaces and public transport are very crowded. Without masks the spikes would be huge!
The efficacy of mask wearing in relation to CoVid-19 has yet to be proved, particularly as it may INCREASE someone’s chances of contracting it. Even WHO are still sending mixed messages on the subject. Furthermore, the false sense of security they provide cannot be under estimated.
In short- it is a waste of time and money.
Same problem when the bubonic plague hit
€5.99 for 3 washable masks in my local chemist. Lldl are selling them for about €2.99 and selling disposable ones at cost price.
They’re 2 euro for a cloth mask in the eurostore
Ta for that… was wondering where to get those black ones :)
4.99 reusable Lidl, I got them for when I have to catch the train again, it will be the polite thing to do whatever your take on the efficiency
In what way is it polite to increase your risk of infection by wearing a cloth mask please?
well I was thinking worn correctly
Masks aren’t required. The guidance says ‘face coverings should be worn’ on public transport. That could be anything. A scarf, a snood etc. They don’t cost €40. Here’s how to make one: https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/face-masks-disposable-gloves.html
The guidance also says that you don’t have to wear one if you have trouble breathing, have special needs etc. https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/aac74c-guidance-on-safe-use-of-face-coverings/
I think it’s fairly clear: if you’re able to wear one, wear one. If you’re not, don’t. And dont bollock anyone else for not wearing one – you dont know what their reason might be.
Lets all look after each other and be nice to each other and we’ll get through this.
If only all covid advice was this sensible..
Thanks Brian!
I bought a washable mask for 2 quid in supervalu.
Yes many on low incomes now cant afford this extra expense ,can the gov make it tax deductible
Lots of good answers, thanks.
Got a couple eurogiant ones myself on the way home :)
A system like the leap card where people are given a reusable/washable mask for a deposit would seem reasonable, not that anyone wants a used mask back, but then again who claims back their leap card deposit?
first pic: the head on yer man down the back of the bus >right side
Well I just think its very commendable of Brother Barnabas to wear a mask as well as his New York Yankees cap.
i’d be more the leggy blonde with fake eyelashes, actually
actually I have it on authority that BB is as fit as fupp
Some of those Luas trams look awfully like buses
So mind yerselves
In case ye end up in Citywest instead of the Ballymount Road
(ʘᴗʘ✿)
im sick of all the moany, selfish “im not wearin one of them” crowd. Putting their very mild discomfort over the lives of others. And don’t say it’s not that, it cleary comes down to that.
Then looking for all kinds of excuses, “i cant breathe in them” oh really? everyone else can. But not you, the special one. “they’re bad for you, you can’t get in enough oxegen” completely untrue, and you only have to wear it on transport and in a shop. It’s not a long time.
just wear the fupping masks. it shouldnt be a debate. lives are at stake. fupping wear it. its easy. stop being a dumb little baby.
I felt you were talking directly at me there, farty
and you’ve put me into a bit of a huff
haha, so you’re an anti-masker?
just see it as a crime against my chiseled jawline
ah, quite the opposite for me. it hides ol’ fartys loose, soft, upper class jowl. Will be wearing it on any Ashley Madison dates in the future.
try one of these: you get a photo of your chiseled jawline printed onto the mask.
win-win!

haha oh my god that’s horrific.
Cling film, dude, it’s the only way.
That 3rd last pic where the elderly woman is wearing a mask and gloves out doing her shopping while a bunch of teenagers stand around beside her basically sums up the whole countries attitude in a nutshell.
There’s a general consensus among the experts that improper use of face masks actually increases your risk of contracting the virus -doing things such as:
– not washing/disinfecting your hands immediately before and after putting on and taking off your mask
– touching the front part of the mask with your hands, instead of straps only
– touching your face more frequently to fiddle with the mask
– getting a false sense of security and breaking social distancing guidelines
– not washing/disposing of the mask after every use, etc, etc
I think it’s clear that unless we were implement a rigorous widespread training program on the correct use of face masks, the whole thing may well do more harm than good. Perhaps camps could be set up across the country requiring everyone to attend ? It’s not going to be easy, though. Rigorous and lengthy training would be required to instill a sense of discipline into a public unaccustomed to mask-wearing and used to constant distraction in their daily lives.
some education on proper disposal of used masks too wouldnt go astray
used masks are 2020’s cigarette butts
Except those who love the oul fag tend to be much less likely to end up registered as CoVid-19?
Then there’s the other side of it. Some interesting musings in this article -maybe obsessively trying to completely stamp out all risk of danger no matter how low, is leading us down a dark path?
https://unherd.com/2020/05/the-hypocrisy-of-safetyism/
” ‘Safetyism’ is a disposition that has been gaining strength for decades and is having a triumphal moment just now because of the virus. Public health, one of many institutions that speak on behalf of safety, has claimed authority to sweep aside whole domains of human activity as reckless, and therefore illegitimate…
I suspect the ease with which we have lately accepted the authority of health experts to reshape the contours of our common life is due to the fact that safetyism has largely displaced other moral sensibilities that might offer some resistance. At the level of sentiment, there appears to be a feedback loop wherein the safer we become, the more intolerable any remaining risk appears. At the level of bureaucratic grasping, we can note that emergency powers are seldom relinquished once the emergency has passed. Together, these dynamics make up a kind of ratchet mechanism that moves in only one direction, tightening against the human spirit.”

Thank you, f_lawless, for the link to the article on The Hypocrisy of Safetyism. It’s a very interesting and well-considered article, containing a warning for everyone.
