“We’ve increased the capacity to 50% which will mean a lot more people can get on the buses and the trains but to match that, to protect people’s health, we’ve made mandatory face masks so everybody getting on to public transport in the next few weeks or days, they’ll have to wear a face mask.”

And some people cannot wear a mask- anxiety disorders and respiratory conditions for example. It cannot be up to a transport employee to be making that call- they have no medical training.
But it goes further. There are already reports from elsewhere of older people passing out and falling- who is liable if someone is seriously injured?
Above all- if masks are so effective then why is infection rates in China and South Korea on the rise again?
Well considering the enormous populations of those countries, especially in their cities, they are still doing well containing it.
The spikes are happening because workers from other states or counties are coming back to work. If they are 20 to 35 years old, they mostly have no symptoms, but their workplaces and public transport are very crowded. Without masks the spikes would be huge!
The efficacy of mask wearing in relation to CoVid-19 has yet to be proved, particularly as it may INCREASE someone’s chances of contracting it. Even WHO are still sending mixed messages on the subject. Furthermore, the false sense of security they provide cannot be under estimated.
In short- it is a waste of time and money.

I think it’s fairly clear: if you’re able to wear one, wear one. If you’re not, don’t. And dont bollock anyone else for not wearing one – you dont know what their reason might be.
Lets all look after each other and be nice to each other and we’ll get through this.

A system like the leap card where people are given a reusable/washable mask for a deposit would seem reasonable, not that anyone wants a used mask back, but then again who claims back their leap card deposit?

im sick of all the moany, selfish “im not wearin one of them” crowd. Putting their very mild discomfort over the lives of others. And don’t say it’s not that, it cleary comes down to that.
Then looking for all kinds of excuses, “i cant breathe in them” oh really? everyone else can. But not you, the special one. “they’re bad for you, you can’t get in enough oxegen” completely untrue, and you only have to wear it on transport and in a shop. It’s not a long time.

That 3rd last pic where the elderly woman is wearing a mask and gloves out doing her shopping while a bunch of teenagers stand around beside her basically sums up the whole countries attitude in a nutshell.
There’s a general consensus among the experts that improper use of face masks actually increases your risk of contracting the virus -doing things such as:
– not washing/disinfecting your hands immediately before and after putting on and taking off your mask
– touching the front part of the mask with your hands, instead of straps only
– touching your face more frequently to fiddle with the mask
– getting a false sense of security and breaking social distancing guidelines
– not washing/disposing of the mask after every use, etc, etc
I think it’s clear that unless we were implement a rigorous widespread training program on the correct use of face masks, the whole thing may well do more harm than good. Perhaps camps could be set up across the country requiring everyone to attend ? It’s not going to be easy, though. Rigorous and lengthy training would be required to instill a sense of discipline into a public unaccustomed to mask-wearing and used to constant distraction in their daily lives.
