    Sajid Javid was with Johnson on Friday so technically both should be self-isolating on Monday – ‘Freedom Day’. Johnson can only get around his own rules if he signs up to taking a daily test.

      Ain’t karma a beach! It couldn’t happen to a nice bloke. Maybe a big dose will make Sajid see sense. If anyone questions me wishing ill on someone, he has earned it as he doesn’t care about the welfare of other people.

          He is vaccinated. It is good to hear that “most” will be fine. I suppose it is only a small number that get long Covid or die, so that is fine. Just as well the hospitals have infinite capacity.

          1. E'Matty

            Yeah, the overwhelming majority who contract the virus are fine. In fact, most who contract won’t even have any symptoms so without the test would not even know they had it. The vulnerable are now vaccinated so only the young are at risk and as we already know, this virus poses much less threat to a young person than the annual flu (Covid is only a threat greater than flu for over 55s and those with serious underlying conditions, who are now all vaccinated). Deaths should be negligible if any at all.

            This virus was never that dangerous to begin with. The threat is poses has been deliberately grotesquely exaggerated, as have deaths attributed to the virus. It poses even less threat now, yet the Branch Covidians continue to act like we’re dealing with the Plague. Long Covid in the young is now being rolled out, as we see here from a classic Covidian, as something we need to keep all of society in perpetual fear of.

            If in 2019 someone would say that society would be subject to restrictions to stop some young people potentially ending up with fatigue and brain fog (ill defined, difficult to measure, and present in those who never had Covid in similar percentages) they’d rightly have been laughed at. Here we are 18 months into this mass hysteria, and this commenter genuinely seems to believe that their argument is logical and reasoned.

          2. Cian

            There were half a million excess deaths in the USA in 2020 (from an expected 3 million).

            So, yes, it is that dangerous.

          3. SOQ

            Because of scale, the US, like China and Russia, are too difficult to gauge but if you look at smaller countries on Eurumomo, you will see that in there is a direct correlation between a mild season in 2019 and a spike in 2020. Inversely, if there was average or above overall deaths in 2019, there was no change for 2020.

            My point is you cannot evidence a figure from any singular year, without context.

          4. Cian

            @SOQ
            More rubbish.

            UK Death per year:
            2020 608,002
            2019 530,841
            2018 541,589
            2017 533,253
            2016 525,048
            2015 529,655

            (or if you prefer by Age-standardised mortality rate per 100,000 )
            2020 1,043.5
            2019   925.0
            2018   965.4
            2017   965.3
            2016   966.9
            2015   993.2

            2020 wasn’t just “making up” for 2019.

            And what does Because of scale, the US, like China and Russia, are too difficult to gauge mean? “Because they don’t agree with your (invalid, and incorrect) point so you’ll ignore them”?

    1. Cian

      I know you have an unhealthy fascination with Varadkar, but what exactly is he doing wrong here?

      1. GiggidyGoo

        Entitled “Protect yourself and others from COVID-19”
        https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/covid19/preventing-the-spread/protect-yourself-and-others/
        “keep at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) away from people you do not live with (social distancing)”

        I’m in exceptional health Cian.

        You might look up the definition of fascinated, fascinating etc. If you think i’m fascinated by Varadkar, then obviously you must be fascinated by me.

        None of them have much spatial awareness have they?

        Do you see what, exactly, they’re all doing wrong?. Shall I buy you a measuring tape?

          1. SOQ

            If Rory O’Neill allows this to happen then he is going to topple from grace so fast he will have a high heel permanently stuck up his Áras

  2. scottser

    Indeed Paddy Casey, i have never understood your popularity either. You have the musical ability of an ambulance siren and the lyrical imagination of a dish cloth.

      1. Charlie

        Isn’t it fantastic? The pandemic ends tomorrow in the U.K. just like magic! Luckily they have a madman in charge to trust and rely upon.

        1. Micko

          UK cases have been growing almost exponentially since the end of May and all the way through June. Reaching over 50K in one SINGLE day yesterday and the day before.

          Yet – hardly any deaths.

          But don’t take my word for it or anyone else’s Charlie.

          Have a look at the figures yourself. Massive rise in cases with hardly any deaths.

          If you disagree, I’d be interested to hear why.
          https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

          1. Charlie

            Just keep the infected away from the rest of us. Make the U.K. a red zone and let them stew in their own virus’ .

          2. Cian

            @Micko
            “hardly any deaths”
            UK deaths in the last month (17th June-17July) 1,014
            death in the previous month: (17th May-17June) 438

            *and* the numbers keep rising.
            End of may/start of july they were averaging less than 10 deaths per day;
            this week 40 deaths/day

          3. Joe

            More than 1200 scientists have now backed a letter in the journal The Lancet saying that the UK’s plan to lift most coronavirus restrictions in England on 19 July is an “unethical experiment”, which poses a serious threat to the rest of the world. The letter argues that lifting restrictions at a time when infection rates are rising could increase the chance of new vaccine-resistant coronavirus variants emerging. “Because of our position as a global travel hub, any variant that becomes dominant in the UK will likely spread to the rest of the globe,” Christina Pagel at University College London said during an emergency summit of scientists and doctors on 16 July

            “from”.

            Their “death within 28-day” is currently showing 128,683 deaths; their “Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate” is 152,856

            The daily number are undercounting.

          5. Micko

            @Cian

            What number of deaths would you accept from Covid before a country returns to normal?

            @Charlie. I see that you didn’t comment at the data I provided you with.

            Why? Did you look at the figures?

          6. Charlie

            I think Cian have may blown up your argument Micko. I’m heading out into the beautiful sunshine and fresh air. You should try it.

            …I’m old enough to remember, the WHO

            One thing that has become very apparent in the Covid era is that scientists can and will be persuaded/coerced to put their names to any piece of politicised pseudo-science no matter how egregious.

            Remember back in Feb 2020 when the Lancet published a highly influential letter signed by a group of scientific experts which denounced any suggestion that virus could have originated in as “conspiracy theory”?

            A year and a half down the line we’ve now come full circle to the point at which a figure like Jamie Metzl, who sits on the WHO’s advisory committee on human genome editing can say: “‘The Lancet letter was scientific propaganda and a form of thuggery and intimidation. By labelling anyone with different views a conspiracy theorist, the Lancet letter was the worst form of bullying in full contravention of the scientific method.”

            https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9649259/Doctor-warned-pandemic-coming-slammed-having-conflict-interest.html

            Lancet letters seeking to exert influence over politics should be taken with a pinch of salt.

          9. Nigel

            ‘denounced any suggestion that virus could have originated in as “conspiracy theory”?’

            Originated in…?

          10. Nigel

            Oh. But that is a conspiracy theory. Am I being thuggish and intimidating? Sorry. But it is.

        As you care so much for your fellow citizens health in Ireland I am sure you will sign this declaration out of care for your fellow humanity in the uk

        “The link between infection and death might have been weakened, but it has not been broken, and infection can still cause substantial morbidity in both acute and long-term illness.
        We have previously pointed to the dangers of relying on immunity by natural infection,3 and we have five main concerns with the UK Government’s plan to lift all restrictions at this stage of the pandemic.”

        “First, unmitigated transmission will disproportionately affect unvaccinated children and young people who have already suffered greatly. “

        1. SOQ

          Time will tell Joe but if UK hospital admissions and fatalities do not rise in line with “cases”- will you admit to being wrong?

          And before you use the guilt tippped collateral damage argument- I suggest you review the UK/Euro/US fatality and injury figures which are emerging.

          1. Joe

            Two doses of the vaccine with 3 weeks for the antibodies to build up after the 2nd dose still seem to be highly effective in preventing hospitalization and serious disease

            Too many in Ireland are unvaccinated or have only received one dose to allow for a full reopening. FFFGGP are putting people before profit and are happy to have an acceptable level of deaths and to hell with any vulnerable workers

            It’s not the fully vaccinated that will suffer, you will see a concurrent rise in the unvaccinated having a higher morbidity rate along with long covid.

            Of course long covid is a serious issue as the UK is discovering and I will never agree that Covid is nothing if not a very serious life threatening disease

            In the UK stats are showing one in 20 people are likely to suffer from COVID-19 symptoms lasting more than 8 weeks. This long-term illness can be a very debilitating illness for those who are affected, I do not want to see the same happen here for the sake of a few weeks until a majority of the younger cohort get vaccinated

          2. Micko

            “ Too many in Ireland are unvaccinated or have only received one dose to allow for a full reopening”

            Actually, the UK relaxed restrictions when they were around the 60% vaccinated mark.

            Which is where we are now.

            read what he wrote.
            “The link between infection and death might have been weakened, but it has not been broken”

            weakened, but still not broken.

            There has already been a rise in hospitalisations – currently there are 4,000 in hospital; two months ago it was under 1000;
            There has already been a rise in patients on ventilators – currently there are 550 ; two months ago it was under 125;
            There has already been a rise in deaths – currently there are 40/day; two months ago it was under 10/day;

    This is to distract public attention away away from what was revealed about nursing home deaths in the dail.
    I doubt any credible threats were made.

  4. Liam Deliverance

    Sinead O’Connor and Ian Bailey, what the hell is going on there, is she a paid journalist for the Indo, doing a celebrity dirty laundry piece, are they acquaintances from before the interview, bizarre.

    1. Charlie

      She’s just doing her newly acquired job. It’s obviously a commission from her editor. Fair play to her. She’ll be a breath of fresh air in journalistic terms. It’s also good for her mental health. It remains to be seen how long her employers patience will endure her direct approach.
