The Cathaoirleach of the Seanad just told me that, under unwritten rules of Seanad procedure, I could praise the President of Ireland as much as I liked, but that I must not utter anything that might be interpreted as a criticism. Sounds very Beijing.

This afternoon.
Anyone?

Such a pity that weird senator was born.
It’s difficult to think of any circumstances where Rónán Mullen could be on the right side of an issue.
File this bleat in Mullen’s seafóid folder.
Can I commend you on the use of seafóid? It’s a wonderful, though seldom heard, term.
The office of the President is autonomous and separate from the other two houses of the Oireachtas, so senators and TDs cannot directly castigate the president from the floor of the Senate or the Dail. Outside the precincts of these houses i.e. on radio-tv or in newspapers, elected reps are free to dissent from the personal opinions of the president. And several do or have done.
Twitter badly need to install an idiot detector.
I’d forgotten Mullen existed. Back to square one now.
He’s like “The Game”, whenever you think about him, you’ve lost.
Who let that gobshite on twitter again?
Mullen is a dose.
Higgins is a fake and always has been, a perfect President of Direland.
…if he wants to criticize Squee why doesn’t he come on Broadsheet like the rest of us…
This adoration that Irish people have for Higgins is dangerously akin to monarchism. Nobody is above criticism, when delivered in a parliamentary fashion. The Cathaoirleach is wrong to cite a rule that doesn’t exist.

They’re all delighted to be holding him up, except L. Varadkar.
