Latest poll underlines @BeattieDoug comment that there will be ‘no united Ireland for generations’. Support withers even more if voters fear extra tax or health charges. I mean, that doesn’t seem that surprising; a government almost fell over the introduction of water charges for a few euro a week; I can’t imagine that the same electorate would be happy at the prospect of paying an extra €5k extra in ‘solidarity taxes’ for the next several generations.
Actually I thought it was an all-Ireland poll, but it appears not to be – oh well, nvm.
Exactly, this poll must have been commissioned by the Ghost of Ian Paisley
Thats the thing. Its an extra €5k per year in tax for every single working adult in Ireland, for probably decades.
Support for a united Ireland goes way down, to a minority, once the financial side of things is explained to people.
Its just not going to happen until the NI economy isn’t a basket case running an astronomical deficit, because almost nobody is willing to pay €100 a week towards something that makes no real difference to their lives.
If there is no support for unity why are the unionists running scared and trying to shut down debate?
Cause that would be giving a concession to those pesky nationalists, and at some point taxes in the uk could potentially be higher than ireland swinging the vote towards a united ireland.
Because they don’t have anything else.
They know Johnson couldn’t give a fiddlers about them and there is nowhere else for them to turn.
So they act out like spoiled children because they are flat out of options. Sadly I have a feeling we are, based on some of the stuff I have been seeing and hearing of late, looking into a resurgence of loyalist violence simply to make unification so unattractive.
It’s also why a majority of Catholics in the north don’t want a united Ireland.
Why give up free healthcare and excellent facilities funded by the 6th largest economy in the world for a third-world health service where thousands of elderly people every year spend nights on a trolley in A&E waiting for a bed and often dying before they get one.
And south of the border just substitute the word Scotland for Ireland – we want something but we want someone else to pay for it.
