Golden Discs will open a flagship store in Dublin’s Jervis Shopping Centre, Jervis Street, Dublin 1

It follows recent store openings in Drogheda, Sligo and Tralee and brings the total number of Golden Discs stores nationwide to 21.

Golden Discs writes:

The vinyl renaissance is driving this expansion, and the flagship Jervis store will be a whopping 2,500 square feet full of new release and deep catalogue vinyl.

The store will also stock a broad range of turntables, headphones and speakers as well as an extensive range of CD, DVD, Boxset and Blu-ray releases.

In addition, the store will carry the groups largest ‘Loot Vault’ section with an increasing array of T-shirts, posters, games, books and limited-edition collectibles for sale. Golden Discs Jervis will be a one-stop shop for all your entertainment needs, perfect for the busy shopper in the run up to Christmas.

CEO Stephen Fitzgerald says:

‘Having only one city-centre store in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, we have been inundated with requests to return to the Henry Street shopping district. Our team has spent a lot of time looking for the right space and we believe this spacious flagship store will be a superb return to the Jervis Shopping Centre.’

In fairness.

Orla Gartland – Figure It Out

Lyric videos are all the rage – but here’s one that offers an innovative new twist.

Director Ryan O’Connor projects the deeply felt words of Orla Gartland’s new single onto the back of her head.

It’s a simple but clever way of illustrating the message in the song: in case it’s not clear, now you can literally read my mind.

The London-based YouTube star (top) returns to her hometown to play a not-to-be-missed headlining show in Whelan’s of Wexford St, Dublin 2, tonight at 9pm.

Nick says: Breaking up is hard to view.

Odd Morris – Lilac Leaves

Odd Morris have hit a purple patch with their new single Lilac Leaves.

Joining the dots between Joy Division and Interpol, the band from Swords, County Dublin, have honed a moody, introspective sound that fits well with singer Daragh Griffin’s thoughtful lyrics.

The video is directed and edited by Cashmere Media.

Odd Morris play Whelan’s, Wexford Street, Dublin 2 on January 31.

Nick says: Morris major.

The votes are in.

Last week, with a voucher worth a princely €25 to spend at Golden Discs on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite song that mentions another song or artist?

You answered in your dozens.

But there could be only one winner.

Third Place:

Bagatelle – Summer In Dublin

Slightly Bemused writes:

“I was singing a song I heard somewhere, called “Rock ‘n’ roll never forgets.
When my hummin’ was smothered by a 46a and the scream of a low flying jet.” For those interested, Rock ‘n’ Roll Never Forgets, by Bob Seger:

Runner up:

Ian Dury & The Blockheads – Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3

Danny writes:

Some of the singers and performers mentioned:
Buddy Holly
Good golly, Miss Molly
The Bolshoi Ballet
Levi’s and Scotty (Moore)
We’re Willy Harris (skiffle star)
Listening to Rico (Rodriguez) went on to play with the Specials
Shostakovich
Smokey Robertson
John Coltrane
Adriano Celentano (Italian singer)

Lots more famous people, but all the above involved in music. Actually I saw him [Dury} perform in the ill-fated Stardust a few weeks before the tragic fire and when I was there the escape door were chained and locked.

Winner:

The Replacements – Alex Chilton

Brian Ahern writes:

“Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes ’round
They sing “I’m in love. What’s that song? I’m in love with that song.”
Alex Chilton of Big Star fame or course!

David Rooney – Home

Wait for it…

Sung and drawn by Wicklow-based illustrator and musician David Rooney, who writes:

I am better known as a visual artist but have in recent years released my debut album produced by Declan O’Rourke and now I’m working with God is an Astronaut’s Torsten Kinsella.

This is the first single with Torsten as producer and features Susan O’Neill on harmony vocals and Floriane Blancke on harp.

Watch to the end for a surprise ending!

Nick says: I’m strangely drawn.

“Few bands can match the enduring influence and appeal of The Clash. The Clash broadened the cultural and political horizons of their audience and, for many, came to exemplify the power of music as a force for radical social change. Their musical tastes becoming ever more eclectic and their political field of vision ever more global…”

The dozen essays include those by Irish authors Coulter, Harry Browne, Kieran Cashell and Conrad Brunström.
