Pat Hussey, the mayor of Tralee, said Fine Gael’s “ridiculous” gender quotas could lead to many situations where “you could have a fantastic candidate overlooked for someone who doesn’t know anything at all about politics”. He said he was in favour of increasing female representation in politics but “they have families and if they want to be politicians they’ll have to pay exorbitant money into creches — it’s all wrong”.

And a Happy International Men’s Day to you and yours.

20/5/2013 Health Committees on AbortionThe Master of Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital has said Ireland’s prohibition on terminations for pregnant women in cases of fatal foetal abnormality should be addressed.

Dr Sam Coulter-Smith (above), in an interview with irishhealth.com, described as ‘crazy’ the current situation whereby women in cases where they are carrying infants with fatal foetal abnormalities are forced to travel to the UK for terminations.

“This issue will require separate legislation – that is something that does need to be addressed. The current situation is crazy. Ultimately we will come around as a society to that but it is an awful shame that we have this crazy situation where women who are carrying babies who have a fatal foetal abnormality are forced to travel to the UK.

Former junior minister Lucinda Creighton will not be entitled to maternity leave after the birth of her child – due to a quirk in the law. Female TDs are paid their full salary after they give birth to a child. But there is no legal right for them to take paid maternity leave because they are classed as “office holders” rather than public sector employees…

Canary Wharf’s lofty office towers are set to be overshadowed by Europe’s tallest residential building in further evidence of London’s effervescent housing market.

Tom Ryan, an Irish property investor, intends to build a £1bn, 74-storey skyscraper on the site he acquired for £100m on Thursday in the business district to the east of the City of London. The tower will be 7 metres higher than Canary Wharf’s tallest office building. The acquisition is the first in what sources say will be a series of UK property investments by Mr Ryan.

Hertsmere is the first British scheme for Mr Ryan, who has invested in several other countries, Mr Berridge said. Ryan Corporation would not provide details of Mr Ryan’s past developments.
