“The land, the land, the land, the land, etc.”

Taken literally this morning. Brian Dennehy and cast tackle John B Keane’s The Field which opens in The Olympia this week. Dennehy plays Bull McCabe, a man so consumed by greed that if he existed today he’d put the field in his wife’s name.

Taken literally within the last 40 minutes.

Conor Hand, sales manager of National Recycling, removes a 1992 BMW from Sean Fitzpatrick’s Greystones home. Mr Hand purchased the motor from the former Anglo boss and intends auctioning it off with proceeds going to charity.

But don’t worry, Seanie still has this 08 Passat, spotted in his driveway below, as a run-around.

Mary! Her brother Thomas! RTE’s Brenda O’Donoghue! Mary’s daughter Debbie! Tescos! Xpose! Checkout number six!

Recriminations and finger-pointing will have to wait another day.

This afternoon, Ballyfermot welcomed home Mary Byrne.

Heart-gladdening.

Special shout-out to Margaret Stanton, of Ballyfermot, below, who was up till all hours last night making her glasses. Worth it though.

Just four of the entries from National Geographic’s 2010 photo contest.

From top to bottom: a supercell thunderstorm in Montana (Sean Heavey); a terrifying face-off between two baboons (Sharon Raoli); lightning strikes the Center Building in downtown Hong Kong (Michael Siward), and a giant Blue Heron picks up lunch (Linh Dinh).

Giant, mind-melting 47 pic gallery here.

Good luck choosing a winner from this lot, Nat Geo.

(Yes, it’s pretty dull)

With almost three quarters of the votes cast in the Donegal South West by-election counted, tallies show Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has a significant lead.

Significant, there’s a word.

The likely winner should be known from unofficial tallies by lunchtime with a final official result due in the late afternoon or evening. Counting is taking place in the Finn Valley Athletics Club in Stranorlar.

Initial results, with 72 per cent of boxes opened, show the Sinn Féin candidate on 39.8 per cent, Fianna Fáil candidate Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill on 21.5 per cent and Fine Gael’s Barry O’Neill on 18.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, on waste ground near Stranorlar A.C., a flock of starlings squabble over a dropped crisp.
