Ah here.

John Gallen writes:

It’s very unusual for an advertiser to use their competitors name in an ad…in Ireland anyway. So, I thought you might like these which I think went up yesterday in Dublin. Do they tie in with the Shetland pony vid thingy?

A Co Clare cliff-based spot for Three mobile.

Fair play though, in fairness.

How does he do that?

You may have noticed our ad space is adorned with Fine Gael’s urge for people to vote’ Yes’ on Thursday.

You may also have muttered: “What the yikes is all that about?”

The party approached us a while back to book the space. Owing to our own profound austerity instead of saying ‘No’ we ummed and ahhed for a bit but finally decided to run the ad for nothing.

We have offered the same free space to the ‘No’ treaty side tomorrow and will then run ads containing a mixture of the two positions on Wednesday.

They literally had no idea this would be offensive.

None.

The TV ad, screened in February ahead of the annual racing event [Cheltenham], stated “…we’re going to make Ladies’ Day even more exciting by sending in some beautiful transgendered ladies. Spot the stallions from the mares”.

The bookmaker said it was never the intention to cause harm or offence and it was “saddened” to learn that some viewers were offended by the ad.
