Cases of Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), which involves blood clots accompanied by a low level of platelets, have previously been reported in recipients of the J&J vaccine.

The FDA in January amended the fact sheet for the J&J vaccine to include the risk of immune thrombocytopenia, months after the European Union’s drugs regulator took similar action.

The FDA on Thursday said the risk of TTS warranted limiting the use of the single-dose shot after it conducted investigation of reported cases.

Patients with Covid-19 face an increased risk of serious blood clots up to six months after being infected, according to new research.

There is an increased risk of pulmonary embolism – a blood clot in the lung – up to six months after infection, the study by Swedish researchers indicates.

For deep vein thrombosis – a blood clot in the leg – there is an increased risk for up to three months and for bleeding events up to two months, they found.

From the records of more than one million people with Covid-19 and four million who were not infected, the researchers identified 401 patients who had the disease and suffered a deep vein thrombosis, and 267 cases in the control group…

However…

The study is observational, so the researchers cannot establish cause. They also note limitations such as possible underdiagnosis of clotting, limited testing for Covid and the non-availability of information on vaccination.

Hailey Baldwin Bieber is recovering after developing a blood clot that moved to her brain

With situations like Bieber’s, the incidents are typically called mini-strokes or a transient ischemic attack (TIA): “That means there was a blood clot, it dissolved up completely and the person is completely a hundred percent back to normal,” Dr. Shazam Hussain, the director of the Cerebrovascular Center at Cleveland Clinic, said.  If an MRI shows any injury to the brain, however, “then it becomes a full stroke.”

Situations like Bieber’s are something that everyone should watch out for, young and old, Hussain says.

“We think of stroke as being something that happens in older ages, but we are seeing it in younger and younger people,” he says. “It relates, generally, to people having unhealthy lifestyles, maybe not eating as well or not getting in regular exercise, along with other factors like genetics. So it’s important that people don’t just think of it as something that happens to older people. If you’re younger and have those symptoms, you’ve got to get to the hospital.”
