What you may need to know:

1. Comic Con came and went. It left behind many trailers. Some that the film distributors wanted you to see and some that they didn’t. Warner Brothers released this trailer, rather begrudgingly, after it leaked online.

2. Doesn’t Will Smith look typically unscary.

3. Captain Boomerang. Snigger.

4. Jared Leto takes on the Joker role. Fair play in fairness.

5. David Ayer directs, promising to stay very faithful to the source material. Which is great. If you like the source material.

6. Sure something has to be done with all those defeated supervillains.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: The long con

8. Release Date: August 5, 2016

Evil Dead

What you may need to know:

1. Chainsaw? Check. Boomstick? Check. Groovy.

2. Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi and Bruce Campbell write and produce this 10-part continuation of the original Evil Dead trilogy.

3. Just don’t mention the remake.

4. The 30-minute format seems like an odd choice, no?

5. It looks like a significant portion of the budget went on fake blood.

6. Bruce Campbell is playing Ronald Reagan in the second season of Fargo. He should be in everything.

7. Go and buy Campbell’s autobiography immediately. Avoid the follow-up novel, though. Awesome title aside, it’s a bit of a letdown.

8. Broadsheet prognosis: Hail to the king baby.

Release Date: October 31.

Brooklyn-Saoirse_Ronan-Poster

What you may need to know

1. Hello Oscar – it’s Saoirse Ronan calling…

2. Based upon the novel by Colm Tóibín. Adapted by Nick Hornby. Directed by John Crowley, who did Intermission (2003).

3.
Between this, Star Wars and The Revenant,  Domhnall Gleeson’s gonna have a hell of a year.

4. Best YouTube comment: ‘NO NO NO HOLLYWOOD THIS IS NOT HOW YOU MAKE A ROMANCE MOVIE, YOU DO NOT MAKE THE GIRL QUIT A GOOD AND NICE GUY FOR A MANIPULATOR’

5. Broadsheet Prognosis: There will be tears. There will be prizes.

Release Date: November

goosebumps

What you may need to know:

1. Adaption of R.L. Stine’s series of children’s horror novels.

2. If you were born in the late 1980s, then this will make you very nostalgic for the TV series.

3. If not, then it’ll just seem like a blatant rip-off of Night at the Museum (2006) and Jumanji (1995).

4. Oh good… Jack Black. </sarcasm>.

5.
Director Rob Letterman also gave us Gulliver’s Travels (2010). Thanks Rob.

6. Does Dylan Minnette look familiar? He played Jack Shephard’s flash sideways son in Lost (2004-2010).

7. Broadsheet prognosis: Geese and desist.

Release Date: October 16.

joe-dirt-2-poster-656

What you may need to know:

1. I know what you’re thinking. “The Eurozone may be in meltdown, the future may look bleak, but at least we finally have a sequel to Joe Dirt (2001).”

2. It’s a Happy Madison production. So, there’s that.

3. Why Christopher Walken, why?

4. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that Saturday Night Live really doesn’t travel well. Like Hershey’s. Or any American beer you can think of.

5. For every Bill Murray, Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig, there’s a Rob Schneider, Adam Sandler or David Spade waiting to stretch a one-joke character into a feature length movie.

6. “Only on Crackle.” The Bing of video streaming services.

7. Broadsheet prognosis: Cheese and crackers.

Release Date:  July 16

Sharknado 3

What you may need to know:

1. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid fulfil contractual obligations in SyFy’s latest critique on climate change.

2. Not sure if watching Sharknado  (2013) and Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014) is necessary for context.

3. So this was the script that tempted Frankie Muniz out of retirement?

4. Bo Derek and the Hoff are also on board for the acting equivalent of chugging.

5. In a seriously uncool move, The Asylum decided to shoot Sharknado 3 with a minimum wage, non-union crew. The difference is imperceptible.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Proof that you can milk a shark.

Release Date:  July 22

creed

What you may need to know:

1. Apollo Creed’s son Adonis Johnson joins the fight game and seeks the help of Philly’s number one son, Rocky.

2. Apollo Creed died in the ring while fighting the man mountain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985). Rocky was in Apollo’s corner for the fight and refused to throw in the towel after Apollo made him promise not to. American pride was at stake. Drago was Russian and his trainers were Cuban.

3. What great trainer said “women weaken legs” anyone?

4. Creed is played by Michael B. Jordan, the second most famous Michael Jordan, of the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station (2013) and Chronicle (2012). Jordan is also doing a turn in the new Fantastic Four (2015) flick as Johnny Storm.

5. Fruitvale Station’s director, Ryan Coogler, takes the helm on this movie too.

6. I see you Mrs. Huxtable (2.02).

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Time catches up with us all Rock. Yeez.

Release Date: TBC

sicario

1.
SWAT officer Kate Macy (Emily Blunt) tracks a Mexican drug lord with the help of mercenary Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro).

2. Nice trailer. Great cast.

3. From Incendies (2010) to Prisoners (2013) and psychological headscratcher Enemy (2013), director Denis Villeneuve has a very impressive track record.

4.
A record which will likely be broken by the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. Some things should be left alone.

5. Benicio is looking like Brad Pitt after a rough night on the sauce.

6.
Broadsheet Prognosis: Traffic 2: Stuck in Traffic.

Release Date: September 25.

Hitman

What you may need to know:

1. First-timer Aleksander Bach directs Zachary Quinto and Rupert Friend as the follicly-challenged assassin. Based on the popular video game series.

2. Alone in the Dark? BloodRayne? Super Mario Bros? What could possibly go wrong?

3. Homeland‘s few remaining fans have been begging to see more of Friend. This probably wasn’t what they had in mind.

4. Given that Quinto’s not involved, is anyone remotely optimistic about Heroes Reborn?

5. Timothy Olyphant already had a crack at the role in 2007. It didn’t go well.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Press R2, X, L1, L2, R2 to activate slo-mo.

Release Date: August 28.

What you may need to know:

1. Widower of taste Eli Roth rips off Michael Haneke’s Funny Games (1997).

2. Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves), an upstanding family man (and archimitect who draws real good) has some sexy time with two unhinged drifters and pays dearly.

3. There may well be a moral buried in this somewhere, but it’s so subtle and understated I’ll be damned if I can find it.

4. It’s hard to shake off the impression that this might have worked better as a comedy.

5. It’s nice to see Reeves getting some appreciation for John Wick (2014), a fine addition to the underserved doggie revenge genre. Also, Side by Side (2012), his documentary on digital vs film is most excellent.

6. When the sad day comes, that “Chocolate with SPRINKLES” line will be in Keanu’s in memoriam Oscar montage.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Enough of this. Give us Bill and Ted 3 now.

Release Date: June 26.
