What you may need to know.

1. What? ANOTHER mega-budget sci-fi spectacular starring Tom Cruise?

2. It’s Groundhog Day (1993) meets Starship Troopers (1997)!

3. If we could live the same day over and over, we’d pick the one where we went to see Oblivion (2013), and go bowling instead.

4. From the director of Swingers (1996)! And Go (1999)!

5. Emily Blunt! Do you get the feeling The Cruiser’s still auditioning for a new wife? Back off, man, she’s already hitched to Jim from The US Office.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: What next? A Jack Reacher sequel? Yeah, sure – next thing you’ll be telling us that he’s doing Top Gun 2.

Release date: May 2014

2. It’s the most eagerly anticipated Irish movie since, well, The Guard.

3. GREAT cast.

4. Has any Irish actor gotten more grief in recent times than Aiden Gillen? Look, dude was in Queer As Folk, The Wire, Love/Hate, Game Of Thrones AND Batman. THIS IS NOT A FLUKE.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Anyone for a McDonagh/Gleeson trilogy? He has to play a TD in the next one.

pompeii

What you may need to know:

1. Jon Snow from Game Of Thrones made a movie. And did a lot of crunches!

2.
There hasn’t been a good volcano movie since Dante’s Peak (1997), or Volcano (1997) with Tommy Lee Jones. No, wait, they were both HORRIBLE.

3. Ominous voiceover guy sounds a bit wobbly.

4.
@ 35 – It’s Mr. Ecko from Lost!

5. Pompeii is directed by hack-tacular b-movie auteur Paul Anderson – the one who did the Resident Evil movies, Event Horizon (1997) and Death Race (2008), as opposed to the one who did There Will Be Blood (2007).

6. The Best Bit: random flood @ 1’58 for no reason whatsoever.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Gladiator meets 300, with the production values of Sharktopus (2010) and the dramatic power of a Sky Movies trailer. We can’t wait.

Release Date: February 2014

amazing_spiderman_two_ver2

What you may need to know.

1. The Spider-Man reboot was pretty horrible. WOO! Here’s the sequel!

2. That said, we like Andrew Garfield and his Amazing Spider-Hair.

3. Classic mistake of superhero sequels – pile on the villains. This one has at least three.

4. It’s Dane De Haan as The Green Goblin! We thought Jamie Foxx’s Electro was meant to be the main baddie, but he barely gets a look in. Neither does poor old Paul Giamatti as The Rhino.

5. Broadsheet Prognosis: All is forgiven, Sam Raimi. And yes, even Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Release date: May 2014

supercut

What you may need to know

1. We do enjoy a good supercut.

2. You won’t get to see some of these movies until next year.

4. The Big Question: what’s the best movie you’ve seen this year?

5. And the worst?

hours

What you may need to know.

1. Hours is one of the final movies starring the late Paul Walker, who passed away over the weekend.

2. Walker was what you’d call a solid leading man type.

3. He’s best known for the Fast And The Furious movies, and had been filming the new one.

4. His best movies? We’re thinking gonzo crime thriller Running Scared (2006), scary trucker flick Joyride (2001) and the sublimely silly Fast 5 (2011).

5. Hours sees Walker trying to stretch a little. It’s a post-Katrina drama.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: R.I.P.

Release Date: 2014

peaches

What you may need to know

1. We’re big fans of polysexual Canadian electro-pop goddess Peaches.

2. Peaches Does Herself is a concert movie, of sorts.

4. It gets better: Peaches is coming to Dublin on December 15, courtesy of the Parti Monster posse.

5. Then there was that time she fought zombie hordes with Iggy Pop.

poster

What you may need to know:

1. Michel Gondry made a documentary about Noam Noal Chomsky (no ‘p’). We’re hearing good things.

2. Gondry did Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) and The Green Hornet (2011), although the less said about the latter, the better.

3. Is The Man… animates a series of chats betwixt Gondry and Chomsky.

4. It’s not to be confused with the other new Chomsky doc.

5. In the meantime, watch a classic Chomsky doc here.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: If you liked Up (2009)…
