album by The Black Keys.

3. They made the official announcement via Mike Tyson’s Twitter page (above).

4. This isn’t the first time the Keys have gone the wacky informercial route. Last time out, they enlisted the help of Bob ‘Better Call Saul’ Odenkirk

5. Needs more Ray.

scratch

What you may need to know:

1. Scratch is a new Irish short film.

2. It’s screening at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, which is kind of a big deal.

3. In NYC? Tribeca screening details here.

4. It stars Ian Lloyd Anderson from Love/Hate, and Stephen Jones, from Love/Hate. Being in Love/Hate is like being in Father Ted – even if you were in it for two seconds, you’re ‘Love/Hate star…’ for THE REST OF YOUR DAYS.

3. Now THIS is what we call a JB impersonation.

4. Dan Aykroyd? Seriously? Him and JB go way back.

5. If you liked Ray (2004), then…

What you may need to know:

2. Mike Judge gave us Beavis And Butthead, King Of The Hill, Office Space (1999) and Idiocracy, so this is a kind of a big deal.

3. HBO are only rocking it these days. They’ve got new seasons of Game Of Thrones and Veep next month, too. And we’re presuming you saw True Detective.

4. The advance word is only massive.

5. Broadsheet Prognosis: The Social Network (2010) meets Office Space

Broadcast Date: April (US)

What you may need to know

1. Nice to be back. We’ve been busy, watching True Detective.

2. The first Sin City (2005) was a lot of fun – they’ve been talking up the sequel for ages. Nine years later, it’s here.

3. New arrivals include Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Josh Brolin, Stacy Keach, Ray Liotta and Lady Gaga.

4. But wait – SPOILER ALERT – weren’t Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis killed in the first one? It’s a prequel, and a sequel, see, like Godfather Part 2 (1974).

5. But why bother? Sin City creator Frank Miller just had another belated prequel/sequel thing, 300: Rise Of An Empire (2004), open, and open big. And director Robert Rodriguez could do with a hit after those brutal Spy Kids and Machete re-threads.

6. All hail Eva Green, BEST BOND GIRL EVER. She’s also in the 300 sequel, and makes the whole thing worth the price of admission alone. Anyone meet her when she was in Dublin shooting Penny Dreadful? .

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Powers Boothe. Always a good idea.

Release Date: August (US)

good vibrationsWe don’t know about you, but we had a GREAT year at the movies.

Best Irish Movie: Good Vibrations Plus Best Scene, to boot:

Most Outrageously Brilliant Thing We Saw All Year: The gonzo ‘Safe Haven‘ segment of horror anthology V/H/S 2, as directed by the guy (Gareth Evans) who did The Raid (2011). Watch it in full here – it’s seriously NSFW, borderline insane, and may mess you up:

Best Movie Everybody Hated But We (sort of) Liked: Only God Forgives. (NB: Drive is over-rated)

Future Cult Classic: The Lone Ranger. Fact.

The ‘What Happened’ Award: Danny Boyle’s Trance, AKA Pants.

Broadsheet Award For Outstanding Services To Cinema: The Rock. Brings it every time.

Best Irish Performance: Brendan Gleeson trying to muster enthusiasm for his role in Smurfs 2 (2013).

Best Irish Director: Paul Duane, who we’ve been telling you about for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. Don’t believe us? Ask Variety.

And the best thing you saw?

4. Dawn... stars Aussie thesp Jason Clarke, from Lawless (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012). Anyone remember Brotherhood?

5. The real star is mo-cap God Andy Serkis, returning as Caesar.

Channing-Tatum-Jonah-Hill-22-Jump-Street-Set

What you may need to know:

1.
The first 21 Jump Street (2012) was the best movie based on an old TV show since The Untouchables (1987). Or maybe The Addams Family (1991). Or A Very Brady Sequel (1996).

2.
Channing Tatum. Master Of Modern Comedy. Who knew? Loved that This Is The End (2013) cameo.

3. Jonah Hill should get his second Oscar nomination for Scorsese’s Wolf Of Wall Street (2013). Loved that Django Unchained (2012) cameo.

4.
We’re still holding out for McConaughey in a Magnum P.I. Movie.
