What you may need to know:

1. Happy might sound like a new Judd Apatow movie, but it isn’t.

2. It’s a new documentary by German visionary Werner Herzog. Herzog documentaries ROCK.

3. Herzog is best known for his collaborations with leading man Klaus Kinski.

4. Unfortunately, Klaus Kinski was a monster.

5. But we digress: Herzog played the bad guy in Jack Reacher (2012), was recently featured on The Simpsons, and once saved Joaquin Phoenix’s life.

What you may need to know:

1. Danny Boyle won the Best Director Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire (2008), having given us two of the most influential motion pictures of the modern age, Trainspotting  (1996) and 28 Days Later (2002). 127 Hours (2010) wasn’t half bad either.

2. Boyle is getting back to the day job after the whole Olympics thing. Word has it he turned down a knighthood the other week.

3. Trance was shot a year ago – Boyle took time out to do the Olympics, then came back and finished it.

4. We’re getting a distinct Trainspotting vibe, then it all goes a bit Shallow Grave (1994). Boyle’s old mucker Rick Smith (from Underworld) did the music.

5. He’s also dating his leading lady, Rosario Dawson (top). We love her.

6. Vincent Cassel! Always a pleasure.

7. James McAvoy is using his Hollywood clout to do smaller British movies, such as this, forthcoming Welcome To The Punch (2013) and an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Filth (2013).

8. Prognosis: Optimistic.

Release Date:
March 2013

What you may need to know:

2. Wrong features Trailer Park faves William Fichtner (Prison Break, Drive Angry) and Steve Little, AKA Stevie from Eastbound And Down.

4. Remember Flat Eric? Nipper en Francais!

5. His last film, Rubber (2010), was about a killer tyre.

6. Great poster.

4. Kevin Bacon is still the centre of the universe.

What you may need to know.

1. Irreverent pensioners are sooooooo hot right now.

2. Terence Stamp is a geezer. He’s General Zod, for starters, and he
inspired this Kinks song.

3. Is that Chistopher Eccleston? He’s going to be on an actual stamp and play the baddie in Thor 2 (2013).

4. This is directed by Paul Andrew Williams, who did inspired no-budget
Brit thriller London To Brighton (2006).

5. This couple will only love it.

Release Date: February 22

What you may need to know:

1. We’re always a little weary of prequels, with the occasional exception, like The Godfather Part II (1974) (a prequel AND a sequel), Smallville and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011).

2. The Carrie Diaries is a prequel to Sex In The City. SJP isn’t involved.

3. Carrie is AnnaSophia Robb, AKA Violet in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (2005).

4. Unlike the original, this one definitely isn’t produced by HBO – it’s from the producers of Gossip Girl, and will air in the US on the CW, home of The Vampire Diaries and 90210.

5. @ 1’24 – it’s Martha Jones from Doctor Who!

6. I know, right?

Release Date: Spring (TBC)

What you may need to know:

1. Colin Farrell’s remake of Total Recall was possibly the most forgettable movie of 2012.

2. Next up: the Farreller stars in the US debut of the director who made
the original screen adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2009).

4. Original ‘Lisbeth Salander’ Noomi Rapace co-stars.

3. We think Colin should do more comedy.

4. On that subject… What did you think of Seven Psychopaths (2012)?

Release date: March 2013

What you may need to know.

1. Visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick took a twenty-year break between his second and third movies. Now he’s just shot three new ones in eighteen months.

2. To The Wonder is Malick’s first movie set entirely in the modern era.

3. Actors like Rachel Weisz, Jessica Chastain and Michael Sheen have had their parts entirely cut from the movie; Terry’s fond of ‘finding’ his films in post-production, notoriously turning Adrien Brody’s leading role in The Thin Red Line (1998) to a bit-part.

4. A decade ago Ben Affleck was a burned-out has-been: today’s he’s an acclaimed filmmaker in his own right, and increasingly choosy when it comes to picking acting roles.

5. To The Wonder is the first Malick movie to be greeted with a largely negative response; at its Venice premiere, they laughed when Bond baddie Javier Bardem turned up as a priest.

6. We say if you’ve done Badlands (1973), Days Of Heaven (1978) and The New World (2005), you can pretty much do whatever you fancy. Any Tree Of Life (2011) lovers out there?

Release Date: April 2013 (TBC)

What you may need to know:

1. First things first: terrible title.

2. But what a cast: Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Olivia Wilde (she’s Irish, kinda) and Jim Carrey.

3. Carrey’s rocking the supporting roles these days, He’s in Kick-Ass 2 (2013), too. We’d still go that Dumb And Dumber (1994)  sequel.

4. Carrell’s movie career has been lukewarm of late; thankfully, he’s got the most eagerly anticipated motion picture event of 2013 on his slate.

5. Hopefully this film will find room for a cameo from the greatest magician of them all.

Release date: Spring 2013
