What you may need to know:

1. This is directed by David O. Russell, who got sent to Director Jail after an infamous viral meltdown then came back with The Fighter (2010). A hit movie cures all ills.

2. In roughly two Hollywood minutes, Hunger Games (2012) star Jennifer Lawrence
goes from being a spunky teen to a love interest for 37-year-old Bradley Cooper.

3. Is this the best gig Robert De Niro can land these days? Probably.

4. Note the presence of Chris Tucker in the wise-cracking best buddy
role. Tucker hasn’t been in a non-Rush Hour movie since 1998. Yes,
he’s annoying, but he rocked in Jackie Brown (1997).

5. We wish Bradley’s Hangover (2009) co-star Zach Galifianikis was starring in
this instead.

Release Date (Ireland): December

What you may need to know

1. This new Irish movie debuts tomorrow at the Galway Film Fleadh.

2. You may recognize leading man Sean Maguire from Eastenders. We loved
him in Meet The Spartans (2008), but don’t tell anybody.

3. Extra point for the Patrick Bergin cameo.

4. Double extra points for actually recognising Patrick Bergin, who now
resembles a bad-ass Old Testament prophet.

5. Random stuffed fox at 1’39.

6. Scots sitcom legend Ford Kiernan at 1’50. What do you mean you’ve
never seen Still Game?

7. We say: It’s Once meets The Hangover!

Song For Amy (IMDB)

What you may need to know:

1. Yes, it’s the movie of the classic ’70s TV show.

2.It’s directed by geezercore maestro Nick Love, the filmmaker behind
The Firm, The Business and The Football Factory. We can’t believe he
didn’t give Danny Dyer a part.

3. Ray Winstone plays the John Thaw role, while rapper-turned-thesp Ben
‘Plan B’ Drew gets his Dennis Waterman on. It was originally meant to
be Winstone and Jason Statham, but The Stat was busy elsewhere.
Kicking ass, presumably.

4. Winstone had a role in the original Sweeney TV show, back in 1976:

5. Here’s the thing: if the original TV show has THE BEST THEME TUNE
EVER
, you should probably use it in the trailer, you slaaaag.

Release date (Ireland): September.

You may recall Delboy’s Broadsheet Trailer Park look at the Dustin Hoffman-directed movie Quartet.

This has just arrived from someone purporting to represent the Weinstein Company (via an email address from Mammoth PR in New York)

Hi There,
Thanks so much for taking down the leaked trailer [we hadn’t]. The Weinstein
Company is requesting that the entire article be removed as the information was also never approved for release. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. The article was posted by Delboy. Thank you again for your cooperation.

Blimey.

They want to erase Delboy’s thoughts.

Is this normal?

What you may need to know:

1. Busy week for The Cruiser: he turned 50, is getting divorced and topped Forbes’ list of highest paid actors. OK, nobody went to see him in Rock Of Ages (2012), but he’s the best thing in it by yards.

2. Jack Reacher brings Lee Child‘s literary bad-ass to the big screen. The movie adapts One Shot, the seventh Reacher novel. Fans were up in arms at Cruise’s casting, primarily because Jack Reacher is 6’5 tall and Tom Cruise stands 3’4 in Bono heels. Or thereabouts.

3. Jack Reacher is written and directed by Chris McQuarrie, who won an Oscar for writing The Usual Suspects (1995) and directed the under-appreciated Way Of The Gun (2000).

4. Plenty of punters out there have issues relating to Tom Cruise, because of his involvement with Scientology, or just because, well he’s plain old creepy. Fair enough. He’ll always be Les Grossman to us.

5. While we’re at it, whatever happened to Tom Crooze?

What you may need to know:

1. Quartet is the first movie directed by Dustin Hoffman.

2. Dusty was supposed to make his directoral debut with Straight Time
(1978), but decided to concentrate on acting in it instead. It’s a stone-cold forgotten ’70s classic.

3. Hoffman’s TV starring debut, Luck, just got cancelled owing to some
unfortunate on-set deaths.
4. Billy Connolly looks set to corner the market in randy/irreverent
pensioner roles.

5. Tom Courtenay is a legend. Fact.

6. Did we mention that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) just made $100M worldwide?

7.The only thing that could possibly save this movie: a Hoffman cameo, reprising his role from Tootsie (1982).

Release date (Ireland): January 2013

What you may need to know:

1. This martial arts spectacular is co-written, directed by and stars Wu-Tang Clan legend The RZA.

2. The film is ‘presented’ by Quentin Tarantino. Naturally.

3. RZA previously starred alongside Russell Crowe in American Gangster (2007). Rusty looks like he’s having fun here.

4.Best tagline of 2012: ‘They put the F-U in king fu’.

5. Plus: Possibly the best eye-popping scene since Evil Dead 2.

Release date (Ireland): Unconfirmed

What you may need to know:

1. It’s directed by Joe Wright, who did Atonement (2007) and Hanna (2011).

2. It stars Jude Law and Keira Knightley, but don’t let that put you off.

3. It also stars ginger screen idol Domhnall Gleeson.

4. It was shot by Armagh’s own Seamus McGarvey, who shot The Avengers and this Irish cult classic.

5. It looks like an elaborate homage to Ken Russell. And we mean that as a compliment.

Release Date (Ireland): September 7th

What you may need to know.

1. Alex Cross features cross-dressing megastar Tyler Perry (star of the Medea movies) in his dramatic leading debut.

2. Matthew Fox plays the psychotic bad guy. He’s been working out. And going full method – allegedly.

3. Morgan Freeman previously played the Cross character – created by novelist James Paterson –  in Kiss The Girls (1997) and Along Came A Spider (2001).

4. Yes, the tagline reads ‘Don’t Ever Cross Alex Cross’

5. We can’t quite believe this is a real movie.

6. Funniest trailer of 2012.

Release date: Unconfirmed (probably November)

What you may need to know.

1. Fed up with bad found-footage horror movies? So are the people who made this, apparently.

2. V/H/S comes from a gaggle of indie noteworthies, amongst them Ti
West
, who made The House Of The Devil (2009) and The Innkeepers (2011), two of the
best horror movies you probably haven’t seen (but should).

3. One of the directors behind V/H/S: Dubliner Glenn McQuaid, from
Artane. His cousin started My Bloody Valentine, apparently.

4. As we may have mentioned already, Irish horror movies are sooo hot
right now.

5. Your favorite scary movie?

Release date: June 28
