What you may need to know

1. Don’t f**k with the Ballymena.

2. Liam Neeson used to be a respected, Oscar-nominated thespian hired
to class up franchises like Star Wars and Batman. Now he’s a 60-year-old bad-ass turning up pissed on the Late Late and banging out the testosterone-driven action flicks like there’s no tomorrow.

3. Like all good sequels, it’s the same film again. Only more so.

4. Albanians = convenient generic European bad guys of choice.

6. The director’s name is Oliver Megaton. Naturally.

5. They should have called it Taken 2: Takener. We haven’t been this
stoked since Crank 2 (2009).

What you may need to know:

1. Judge Dredd is a character from classic Brit sci-fi comic 2000AD. Sly Stallone starred as Dredd back in 1995. It didn’t go well.

2. This second bash is more faithful to the original comics. Dredd don’t take his helmet off for no-one.

3. Behind the helmet? Kiwi bad-ass Karl Urban, AKA Éomer from Lord Of The Rings and Bones McCoy from the Star Trek re-boot.

4. The bad guy is played by Lena Headey with some heavy scarring make up so you may not realise she also plays Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones.

5. It’s written by Alex Garland, and directed by Pete Travis, who did Omagh.

6. Irish connection: hot ginger Domhnall Gleeson is in it somewhere.

7.. Looks like: a dystopian version of The Raid (2011), minus the cool martial arts bits.

What you need to know:

1. The Master is writer/director P. T. Anderson’s first film since
There Will Be Blood (2007).

2. P.T.A’s earlier masterworks include Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999) and
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

3. The Master marks Joaquin Phoenix’s return to acting duties proper after his wilderness period.

4. Anderson insists that the film is NOT inspired by L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, possibly in a doomed attempt to (a) circumvent controversy and (b) avoid pissing off Tom Cruise.

5. The film was shot in 70MM. We’re talking old-school wide screen splendour.

6. Three words: Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Two more: great ‘tache.

Release date: November

What you need to know:

1. Bruce Willis is underrated.

2. Hey! It’s the dude from Fringe! Great show.

3. Leading lady Rebecca Hall is British. She was American in Vicky
Christina Barcelona
, too.

4. Hey! Catherine Zeta Jones is still getting work. Bless.

5. Stephen Frears directed this. The man made The Grifters (1990), The Snapper (1993) and The Queen (2006). Not to mention My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Dangerous Liasons (1988), High Fidelity (2000) and Dirty Pretty Things (2002).

6. Vince Vaughan’s in the movie. They left him out of the trailer. Smart move.

7.. It opens on Friday.

What you need to know:

1. Anybody order some deep fried southern gothic, with extra ham?

2. Any film directed by William Friedkin will automatically come
attached with the tagline ‘From the director of The French Connection
and The Exorcist’. Fair enough.

3. He’s directed some decent movies since then – To Live And Die In LA (1985),
Sorcerer (1977) and Bug (2006), for starters.

4. Killer Joe is being released unrated in the US, due to nasty business
involving a chicken drumstick.

5. One Word: McConaughey!

Killer Joe (IMDB)

Release date (ireland); June 29

Friedkin update:

What you need to know:

1. Steven Soderbergh still says he’s retiring. We’ll believe it when it happens.

2. Best way to describe this trailer: load of arse.

3. The movie is based on leading man Channing Tatum‘s experiences as a stripper.

4. Soderbergh made Dublin look cool in Haywire.

5. One Word: McConaughey.

Released in Ireland: July 11

Six things you need to know.

1. Flight is the first live-action feature in over a decade from Robert Zemeckis, who did Back To The Future, then won a Best Director Oscar for Forrest Gump, then decided to ill-advisedly devote himself to making creepy motion capture pictures like The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol. That said, he directed Used Cars with Kurt Russell. So he gets a free pass.

2. Forget Clooney – Denzel Washington is THE only great movie star still in the game. So what if he spends most of his time collecting big paychecks for dodgy runaway train flicks? Denzel is the man.

3. Cinematic Equation: Stones on the soundtrack = Zemeckis getting his
Marty Scorsese on.

4. John Goodman appears to be channeling The Big Lebowski here. Not
necessarily a bad thing. The diet seems to be working, too.

5. DON CHEADLE! Don and Den haven’t shared the screen since Devil In A
Blue Dress
. Tasty.

6. Cinematic Equation 2: Bad Denzel = Always a winner.

BOTTOM LINE: Best in-flight movie since the last Final Destination flick.

Six Things You Need To Know

1. It’s the new Quentin Tarantino, all right? That’s pretty much all
you need to know.

2. It’s QT’s ‘unique’ riff on the cult Spaghetti western Django. Movie
nerds keep your eyes peeled for original Django star Franco Nero. And
Don Johnson dressed as Colonel Sanders.

3. Jamie Foxx is in it because Will Smith turned Tarantino down to do Men In
Black III. Seriously.

4. Reservoir Dogs is 20 years old this year. Jesus Christ.

5. Quentin wanted Leo DiCaprio to play the Christoph Waltz part in
Inglorious Bastards.

6. Great trailer.

FIVE Things You Need To Know.

1. A Bourne movie minus Bourne (Matt Damon bailed) is a really terrible idea.

2. A Bourne movie starring Jeremy Renner as an entirely different
character in the same spy program as Bourne, written and directed by
Tony Gilroy (who wrote the other ones, and directed the awesome
Michael Clayton) ‘aint such a terrible idea. We’re there.

3. Ed Norton is the bad guy. He rocked in Moonrise Kingdom, and we
loved his cameo in The Dictator. That said, bet he’s sick he’s not in
The Avengers.

4. Renner rocks hard, and he’s Mr. Franchise Viagra these days, after
M:I 4 and The Avengers. He also  does a voice in the new Ice Age
movie, too. Remember him in 28 Weeks Later?

5. Three Little Words: Stacy Fuckin’ Keach!

What you need to know:

1. If you’re going to have Aussie hard men Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe face off on screen, it had better be in a goddamn musical.
2. We can’t believe they hired Anne Hathaway over the natural choice for the role, Susan Boyle.
3. Sasha Baron Cohen is in it, but they can’t be arsed putting him in the trailer.
4. Russell Crowe plays Superman’s Dad Jor-El in next year’s unnecessary reboot, thus officially kicking off his fat Brando phase.
5. Yes, Colm T. Wilkinson has a cameo.
6. That song will be in your head for the rest of the day
