I can’t put my finger on why someone who sounds like they’re suffering from a bad case of laryngitis would sound so appealing and emotive – maybe because it sounds like how your voice might go when you’re consumed with emotion, not sure.

Moon River – whether it be Audrey Hepburn, Andy Williams (above), Sinatra, Jerry Butler or any number of others who covered it, its one of those quintessential songs of the mid century that is pure magic.. Even Frank Ocean’s attempt at butchery was saved by the pure beauty of the melody and lyric.

Reminds me of family get-togethers in the 70s when i was a wee’un, adults raising glasses and laughing and warmth of cosy family time, and whenever iI hear it, iI get a dose of fuzzy golden-hued nostalgia.

Golden Discs will open a flagship store in Dublin’s Jervis Shopping Centre, Jervis Street, Dublin 1

It follows recent store openings in Drogheda, Sligo and Tralee and brings the total number of Golden Discs stores nationwide to 21.

Golden Discs writes:

The vinyl renaissance is driving this expansion, and the flagship Jervis store will be a whopping 2,500 square feet full of new release and deep catalogue vinyl.

The store will also stock a broad range of turntables, headphones and speakers as well as an extensive range of CD, DVD, Boxset and Blu-ray releases.

In addition, the store will carry the groups largest ‘Loot Vault’ section with an increasing array of T-shirts, posters, games, books and limited-edition collectibles for sale. Golden Discs Jervis will be a one-stop shop for all your entertainment needs, perfect for the busy shopper in the run up to Christmas.

CEO Stephen Fitzgerald says:

‘Having only one city-centre store in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, we have been inundated with requests to return to the Henry Street shopping district. Our team has spent a lot of time looking for the right space and we believe this spacious flagship store will be a superb return to the Jervis Shopping Centre.’

Killing Joke – On All Hallows Eve

Liam Deliverance writes:

A unusual track, it’s soft and upbeat verses and chorus, strong steady beat and soft/hard lead guitar sections. Instead of demons and ghosts rising from the dead to haunt the living world this song imagines these two worlds converging and a reunion of those lost souls who once filled our lives.

While listening it’s hard not to think of some of those souls, to be reminded of the small cracks they left in our hearts, that sting that has replaced their presence. The tempo of the track allows you to do that and it gives it a certain resonance.

Killing Joke formed in 1978 in Notting Hill, London. Their initial style was industrial rock and they played a part in influencing such bands as Metallica, Nirvana and the Nine Inch Nails.

As the years passed their style softened and they brought some electronic elements into their songs. They have produced 19 albums, On All Hallows Eve is taken from their 2012 album, MMXII…

This song gets me every time, I love how it encapsulates the loneliness and solitude of separation and distance. Yet another example of why Shane MacGowan is a national treasure.
