Not my favourite travelling song, but one that really means a lot to me. The film – Pitch Perfect (2012) came out at the right time and when we got together, this is the only song so far I have sung with my daughter. She kept correcting me on how it is sung (I cannot sing, so a hopeless act), but still she would sing it with me. As we drove between where she and her mom live and her grandparents she attempted to correct me. One of my favourite road trips with her, although they all were. Corny and all as it is, I love it. I give you the much maligned, but in my heart loved, Cups song by Anna Kendrick…

My mother’s favourite song! I recently heard Judy Garland’s version, and it moved me to tears as that was her favourite version….

“I wrote a poem on a dog biscuit”… Probably the only time I’ve known the canine comestible mentioned in popular culture. The song takes me back to the autumn of 1990 when the song was released, and a move from Dublin to London via Edinburgh. Buying the CD single and the album it’s from (“This Is Our Music”) in the original Fopp record shop on Cockburn Street in Edinburgh. That beautiful hilly winding street, still a favourite to this day, and the biting cold of northern Britain….

Please play anything from Makem and Clancy for my recently deceased Dad.He just loved them and in 1990, he loaned me his Volkswagen Passat to get 6 o clock Mass on a Sunday evening (I was an early driver). When I came out (in my state of grace) I discovered that the passenger window had been smashed in and the stereo stolen.
I drove home in tears and Dessie (my dad) said ‘not a bother’ and replaced the window and eventually the stereo. I was very apologetic cos his “Best of Makem and Clancy” tape was in the tapedeck (no CD players in those days)… it solved my next Father’s Day present, but now I can only give him a few flowers…

I select this, because I would never select this.When I was an obnoxious teenager, my Dad took me to work with him and taught me to drive for a whole Summer. I made him listen to some terrible 90s crap on the radio, and looking back I think what a wonderful patient man he was for putting up with me. Italia ’90, two words that conjure up magical memories, summertime and the living was easy, we had hopes and we had dreams. It was like Ireland was 18, she had just finished her Leaving Cert and now had two glorious, sunny, stress free months stretching out in front of her all the way to the horizon. The work was done, the exams taken,results day was unimportant for now.The 80’s were gone, a distant memory. The 90’s were here now, a new era, a new dream. The beautiful game, the beautiful man and his beautiful voice.

The greatest ever football song is “Sunshine on Leith” by The Proclaimers because it’s just a perfect fit for football. The song is a very emotional one. It very much evokes hope and heartbreak. It’s rooted in place. Just as the band are of Leith so are the football club that has made it their own.
That connection to place and belonging is what football and it’s tribalism is all about. I’m not a Hibs fan but I tip the hat to them and their use of this song as a football anthem in particular. They are not an overly successful club. They’re from an area that has had it’s deep problems in the past.
They famously broke a 114 year ‘curse’ by winning The Scottish Cup in 2016 and that relief, ecstasy, the underdog having his day is all entangled with the song and for those reasons I reckon it’s a beauty. Watch this and you’ll just want to sing and sway along.
