We’re bac…Hang on.

Oh.

Still.

Worth watching.

If only for this exchange between FT writers Martin Sandbu and John Authers.

Martin Sandbu: “The Irish yields were so high because the Irish Government took on all this private bank debt – foolishly, under pressure from Frankfurt and Berlin and Brussels. But maybe there’s a way to undo some of that damage.”

John Authers: “Ok. Now that would be good because, let’s take a look at what the economic damage has been to Ireland (image below) and, you know, if you don’t mind my channelling my inner Paul Krugman this is not exactly an advertisement for austerity is it? It’s been a horrible economy for the last few…”

Sandbu: “It’s, it’s just terrifying. We should remember that there was very solid, artificial growth maybe before 2007/2008. And some of that had to go away. But this, this is just painful. Unemployment rates up to 15% and of course what you don’t have in that chart is emigration…”

Authers: “Exactly.”

Sandbu: “..has picked up again. This traditional safety valve in the Irish economy. But of course devastating for the..basically, social well being. No it’s true. It hasn’t done anything good for the Irish. Except maybe they’ve shown that they can do this. They’ve done what the Eurozone has told them to do. They’ve done what investors want them to do. And maybe, just maybe there is some reward in sight. That would be the only thing that could redeem this horrible picture.

Authers: “Or there may be a reward in sight now that they’ve fixed the mechanism for bank bailouts.”

Sadnbu: “If they do, that’s true.”

They came. They saw. They conquered their way to a very respectable second place.

Ireland’s adventures in Amsterdam.

Conor Walsh writes:

I have spent the last week pulling together a little highlight video of our trip. Some of the Broadsheet massive might find it interesting to see.

Ireland took silver in the Lacrosse European Championships on Saturday

Conor Walsh writes:

Just want to say thank you for posting about us during the tournament. We entered the tournament as the 6th seed with nobody expecting us to do well. We opened the campaign with 3 tough losses but managed to turn it around and came away as Silver Medalists (see Brendan Walsh, no relation, above). For anyone who has seen the posts and is interested in taking up lacrosse should go to IrelandLacrosse for more information. All ages and all skill levels are encouraged to start playing and who knows, maybe in 4 years time we will be champions of Europe.

Setting up a metaphor-laden quarter final with Germany.

Conor Walsh, who plays for the Ireland lacrosse team competing at the European Championship in Amsterdam, writes:

We beat Slovakia today fairly comfortably and now face Germany in the Quarter Finals tomorrow afternoon at 4pm Irish Time. The game will be available live online here for €3. We played Germany in the group stages and lost by one goal in triple sudden death overtime. Hopefully we have learned from the last game and will be able to pull off a win and progress to the semi finals on Thursday.  Thanks for the the support.

You may recall last week’s post from Conor Walsh, who plays for the Ireland lacrosse team, currently competing in the lacrosse European Championship in Amsterdam.

Conor writes:

I promised to keep you updated on our results as we go, but it has been really hectic since we got to Amsterdam. We have a game every day which leaves little time for sending emails.

We have finished 3rd in the top division with wins over Sweden (12 – 4) and Finland (8 – 7 in quadruple sudden death overtime). We lost out to England (11 – 7), Netherlands (11 – 7) and Germany (12 – 11 in triple sudden death overtime).

Tomorrow we play Slovakia for a place in the Quarter Finals which will be against Germany on Wednesday.

Great if you could post an update about it, so we can garner some support back home.
