St Agnes’ Church, Crumlin, Dublin, earlier for the funeral of Peter Comerford mentioned yesterday.

Ciaran O’Driscoll writes:

More than 100 people attended including locals, members of the Defence Forces and the Gardaí. From the dignity that the priest gave in speaking about Peter, to the singer and accompanying harpist, it was a proper funeral befitting a former member of the Defence Forces. A send off that he, and everyone else, deserves to have.

‘B’ adds:

My lovely mother went to that veteran’s funeral today (her father was an early recruit to the Defence Forces). He [Peter] seems to have been a troubled soul in his later life, but the priest spoke movingly and a few tears were shed by mourners. He served in the Congo too. Bagpipes played the coffin out…

Paddy Gilford, of the Irish Defence Forces Veterans’ Association, writes:

Peter Comerford who left the Defence Forces in 1971 and who servd in the 5th Infantry Battalion has died. No relatives can be found. Maybe somebody would have an hour to spare to attend the Mass tomorrow morning.
The Funeral Mass will be held in St Agnes’ church, Crumlin, Dublin, at 11.30am with cremation at Harolds Cross Cemetery at 1pm.
Hopefully somebody will have a bit of time to spare to honour a fallen comrade.

Irish troops will once again serve as peacekeepers in the Lebanon from next month.

Defence Minister Alan Shatter confirmed he had secured Dail approval for the deployment of 440 soldiers to the United Nations-mandated force in the Middle East.

About 90 troops will depart on May 23 to set up the base camp in southern Lebanon for the main contingent, to be deployed towards the end of June.

Noble work, the announcement of which was unfortunately timed.
