The socks are a tribute to “Galway Yellow” (AKA Big Yellow Thing) sculpture on NUIG’s campus

Amuse your friends.

Dazzle your enemies.

Joanne Brophy, of NUI Galway Students’ Union, writes:

Our Students’ Union Charity Socks Are Back!

The socks are a collaboration with Galway company Irish Socksciety and are on sale now for €9 a pair with all proceeds going to the SU charities.

They’re an ideal present for anyone who has ever said “I’ll meet ya at the Big Yellow Thing” over the years!

The “Galway Yellow” sculpture outside the NUIG Library was created by artist Brian King in 1976 and has been a landmark and meeting point for UCG/NUIG students since then. It goes by a few nicknames most commonly “The Big Yellow Thing” but also “The Squiggle” and “Archimedes Balls”. The socks are on sale now from the SU website and the SU Shop at NUI Galway (8.30am-4pm Mon-Fri) The SU Charities this year are: Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health.

Feast Roast.

A vegan alternative to stuffed turkey crown.

Finally.

From Irish start-up Thanks Plants.

Luke Brennan writes:

If anyone is interested in eating a bit less meat this Christmas, this (above) is what I am going for.

They have a rather delicious Seiten festive roast. Seiten flour is the same core ingredient in their vegan sausage range, which I got slightly addicted to this summer. Available in most Dublin based SuperValu stores, or online through their website (at link below). Not quite a stocking filler, but 100% Irish and a great addition to the Christmas table!

This Christmas.

Give pot a chance.

Brian Colhoun writes:

My uncle Jim Behan from Carlow is a pure craftsman. He has been, for the 35 years I remember, making pottery. His dedication to it is astounding.

His kiln in his garden in Carlow is one of the most amazing places you could be, 1000s of items created there. A staple of his nieces’ and nephews’ childhood visiting Carlow.

He now, finally, has it available online. The work is intricate as it is beautiful.

In fairness.

Leather goods.

From the hands of acclaimed bluegrass musician and songwriter Niall Toner.

Niall Toner Jnr writes:

My oul fella (still a musician at 75, silenced by the Corona) has taken to making leather craft stuff during the lockdown.

He has a bit of a history of this, having founded the famous Toner motorcycle leathers brand in the late 1970s/early 80s.

These days he is making guitar straps and small pieces of furniture from repurposed leather, so it is suitable for (some) vegetarians too.

His handmade guitar straps can be got here.
