Áras an Uachtaráin has confirmed that Sabina Higgins, wife of President Michael D Higgins, visited Aosdána member and peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy in Limerick Prison at the weekend.
Ms Higgins’s visit was undertaken in a private capacity, a spokesman said. The visit took place less than a week after Ms D’Arcy, who is 79 and undergoing treatment for cancer, was jailed for refusing to sign a bond to uphold the law and keep away from unauthorised zones at Shannon airport.

Both women have been friends in Galway for many years, and President Higgins spoke at the funeral of D’Arcy’s husband, playwright John Arden.

There’s Nell now.

Supporters of Margaretta D’Arcy [including Independent TDs Mick and Clare Daly and journalist Nell McCafferty] gather outside the Department of Justice, at St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin within the last hour.

They’re protesting over the jailing of Margaretta, who was convicted of unlawfully entering Shannon Airport in October 2012 during a protest against the US military using Shannon Airport.

Margaretta, 79, was given a three-month suspended sentence but it was activated after she refused to sign a bond to uphold the law and keep away from unauthorised zones in Shannon.

[Feminist and peace activist, Margaretta D’Arcy]

Margaretta D’Arcy, who is 79 and undergoing cancer treatment, was arrested at her Galway home on Wednesday and subsequently jailed for three months in Limerick Prison over protests against the US military using Shannon Airport.

A three-month suspended sentence, which she received for illegal incursion of the runway at Shannon, was activated after she refused to sign a bond to uphold the law and keep away from unauthorised zones in Shannon.

There will be a protest, against her imprisonment, outside the Department of Justice offices at St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin at 1pm today.

There will also be a protest outside Labour TD, Derek Nolan’s office by the Harbour Hotel in Galway, also at 1pm.
