A former Anglo Irish Bank clerk has been given a suspend sentence for defrauding his employer of €200,000 while the bank was being nationalised.

[Gordon] O’Brien had set the money aside “as a war chest” because he was going to lose his job in the wind-up of the bank.

His counsel said his wife was also going to lose her job with another bank and his son had just been diagnosed with autism and faced having his education grant cut.

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced O’Brien to four years in prison, but suspended it full for three years.

The Limerick man committed the fraud by transferring clients’ money into several bank accounts he controlled. He would then take money from internal Anglo accounts and put it into the clients’ accounts to make them appear in order.

The years have not been kind.

This morning Mr [Pat] Neary said that he didn’t ask [Sean] Mr Quinn outright about his CFD [Contracts for difference] holding in Anglo because he didn’t feel it was “fair or appropriate” to tackle a person about their own private portfolio.
Earlier, Mr Neary said “no information whatsoever” in the Autumn of 2007 about the scale of businessman Sean Quinn’s stake in the bank, despite strong market rumours.
Mr Neary said that the first time he became aware of the scale of Mr Quinn’s indirect holding, built up through CFDs was on Good Friday, March 21st 2008.

A protest outside Leinster House this afternoon as inside an Oireachtas Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform committee decided the fate of IBRC (formerly Anglo Irish Bank and Nationwide) mortgage holders.

“Yesterday the liquidators said they had reached agreement with bidders for the mortgages to uphold the code of conduct which protects mortgage holders in arrears. However, today liquidator Kieran Wallace said there was no written agreement with bidders. He also agreed the deal had no legal standing.

A rare and fascinating find for the day that’s in it.

I thought I’d draw your attention to this video : It’s Aine Lawlor interviewing Sean FitzPatrick from December ’07 and in the intervening years it’s stuck in my memory for obvious reasons, more so than the Marian Finucane interview the week after the Bank Guarantee.
By pure coincidence I found it last night on an old hard-drive. I had downloaded it maybe four or five years agy, and knowing the way things can disappear from the internet, I thought it was worth keeping. Naturally, when the inevitable happened  and I wanted to upload it to Youtube so that it would still be available for people still, I could not find it. Until last night….
