Last Saturday’s Irish Independent reported that the former Anglo Irish Bank compiled a list of ‘politically-exposed persons’ (PEP) borrowers, which included certain rugby players, RTÉ stars, musicians, judges and some senior legal professionals, before it was liquidated last February.

The paper reported that the list was presented to the board of IBRC every quarter after it was nationalised in 2009 and that some of the high-profile borrowers’ details were provided by the IBRC to the State under a dedicated ‘Relationship Framework’ document, regulating dealings between the Finance Minister and the bank, after it was taken into State ownership.

At the time IBRC was liquidated, many of these loans were performing, others were impaired while other debtors couldn’t agree on a repayment strategy.

The newspaper didn’t reveal any names and, in its editorial said: “The identity of the PEPs was and remains confidential.”

But yesterday, the paper reported further on the list, saying six Catholic religious orders were placed on the PEP list, as well as a retired senior judge, an RTÉ star, an insolvency expert, a bestselling novelist, a member of the Seanad, lawyers, journalists, some of the country’s leading pension funds, a prominent businessman (*cough*) and a property syndicate, involving a number of “law library luminaries”

The Sisters of the Infant Jesus were on the PEP list and ‘suffered in the crash’, while the Diocese of Ossory escaped without any losses.

Meanwhile, this morning, the Irish Times reports former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank Alan Dukes saying:

“The relationship framework between Anglo/IBRC and the Minister for Finance provided for notification to the Minister of matters of potential public interest. Very few such cases actually arose. In no case was there any discussion of preferential treatment of any kind… “IBRC created the lists of politically exposed or high-profile persons to ensure there could be no suggestion that any credit decision in relation to somebody well-known or influential had been granted preferentially.”

Hmmm.

They ripped off everyone.

A US court has been told that the former Anglo Irish Bank overcharged clients by more than half a billion euro.
The allegation was made by Eddie Fitzpatrick, who runs a forensic banking firm called Bankcheck.
Mr Fitzpatick’s claim is part of litigation being taken by Irish developer John Flynn, who is making allegations of fraud against IBRC; formerly Anglo Irish Bank.
Mr Flynn is objecting to the liquidation of IBRC because it could block him being paid damages if he won his fraud case.
In new documents lodged in US Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, Mr Fitzpatrick said he had audited 31 separate customer accounts.
He found the clients had been overcharged as a result of “loading” of interest rates…

A federal crime.

As John Grisham fans will know.

Denis O’Brien, the billionaire Irish owner of Digicel Group Ltd., said he wants to bring the Ryder Cup to his golf course in Spain, as buyers pay as much as $3 million for homes at the resort.”

“O’Brien sold about 28 properties last year in his PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona, and he expects to sell between 40 and 45 this year, according to an interview with Bloomberg Television. The buyers include Germans, French, Swiss, Russians and Kazakhs, O’Brien said.”

“We have a boatload” of customers, said O’Brien. “These would be high-end properties anywhere from $1 million up to $3 million.”

“The Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC), which includes the rump of the failed Anglo Irish Bank, last year tightened its grip on the PGA Golf Catalunya, one of the courses owned by O’Brien’s golf holding company, Murrayhill.”

“The deal gave the IBRC a claim over shares in the club as part of a refinancing. The loss-making resort has struggled to shift high-priced villas in recession-hit Spain.”

A day after announcing that no further action will be taken by the Central Bank against those recorded on the Anglo Tapes.

Because what was said did not relate “to criminal offences that had occured”.

That’s why he’s the banker other bankers call The Guv’nor.

[Michael] Martin said that in recent weeks the Taoiseach reacted to the Anglo Tapes, published by the Irish Independent, and spoke about an “axis of collusion” without a scrap of evidence.

The Fianna Fáil leader said the reports leave the Taoiseach red-faced because they show he was engaged in personal informal contact with Anglo senior management, and that they suggest the Taoiseach deliberately misled the Dáil in response to the Anglo Tape story when he talked about his personal contact with Anglo, as the only example he cited was a meeting in September 2008.

The former Anglo executive also writes about being in regular contact with former Fianna Fail TD Beverley Flynn.

He writes about “conversations” with Ms Flynn, and how she would update him on discussions with then Finance Minister Brian Lenihan.

Mr Moran is from Mr Kenny and Ms Flynn’s home town of Castlebar, Co Mayo.

“It seems inconceivable that senior management in Anglo didn’t know that the gardaí had sought court orders for these tapes

“Alan Dukes was appointed as a public interest director to the bank in December 2008 and paid €127,000 in 2010.

He became chairperson in 2010. But he wasn’t the only political appointment to the Bank. Former Fianna Fáil senator, Aidan Eames was appointed to the Board in June 2010.”

The Public Interest Directors didn’t inform the Central Bank at the time. It seems they didn’t even inform the government,”

“Why did Alan Dukes sing dumb? Tánaiste what are you going to do about these tapes?
