PBS is a non-profit television network and home to Sesame Street.

The station is 50 per cent funded from private donations and the rest from government subsidies. By law, its news output is required to be fair and balanced.

Which is where Mitt comes in.

About 30 minutes into the verbal contest between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the former governor explained that he would cut what he considers non-essential items in the budget, including cuts to PBS, which employs debate moderator Jim Lehrer.

“I’m sorry Jim. I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m gonna stop other things,” Romney said. “I like PBS, I like Big Bird, I actually like you too.”

At that point, someone in the Twitterverse responded by creating a @FiredBigBird account, which within minutes] had almost 9,900 followers.

“I worked with Big Bird. I served with Big Bird. You, sir, are no Big Bird,” The Lance Arthur, @thelancearthur, of San Francisco tweeted.

A heebie-jeebie inducing picture taken a few weeks ago in a Paraguayan supermarket of a giant rat nomming on cheese, mushrooms and olives inside a deli counter display case, seemingly unnoticed by staff.

The pic subsequently went viral (what else?) on Twitter. The shop and the entire mall where it’s located have since been shut down by the local health authority.

MINISTER FOR Health James Reilly remained under pressure last night after a day of further controversy and calls for his resignation by two Labour MEPs.

The Taoiseach last night reaffirmed his support for Dr Reilly but there was growing unease in the Government parties over the unrelenting controversies in health.

Labour Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn was said to be incensed after he misled the Dáil with information provided by Dr Reilly’s department. Sources said he was “not prepared to take the fall” for another Minister’s mistake.

Don’t fancy your chances on that thin ice there, Bottler.
