‘Trial of the Centurys’.

A new musical at the Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar, Dublin and part of the Dublin Fringe Festival.

Maggie Fagan writes:

The show is a musical, starring comedians Kevin McGahern & Tony Cantwell as intergalactic popstar twins whose very existence is put under threat when an absurd lawsuit gets in the way of their best-laid plans.

The original soundtrack is written by [indie label] Popical Island’s very own No Monster Club.

We’re on in the Project Arts Centre Cube from September 18-22, and we’d love to see Broadsheet readers there…

No Monster Clublost somewhere in the backwoods

What you may need to know…

01. Bobby and the lads are off in Amerikay at present, pressing the flesh and raking up road miles to support their current 7″ record, Where Did You Get That Milkshake?.

02. It’s somehow the Dublin lo-fi lads’ debut 7″ after a rake of releases, but also their first for Stateside label Emotional Response.

03. We would hope that the video above, for single Do the Mess Around, has not been an accurate portrayal of events thus far.

04. Broadsheet readers situated Stateside might be able to show up and give ’em the shlag. The rest of their tour takes them to the Dev in Utica tonight; tomorrow night to Otto’s Shrunken Head in Manhattan; Candy Apple Island in Bloomfield, NJ on the 2nd, and New Funky Jungle in Providence, RI on the 5th.

VERDICT: Another pop gem the likes of which Bobby Aherne and the boys seem to just have in a stockpile somewhere. Grand.

No Monster Club’s I’ve Retired.

One song’s odyssey through different band configurations and venues big, small and homely.

Includes footage from Whelan’s, BelloBar, Birthdays, Knockanstockan, Roisin Dubh, Sweeney’s, The R.A.G.E., The Pop Inn, The Academy, Castlepalooza, Pine Lodge, The Ashdale Living Room, The Button Factory and Connolly’s of Leap, West Cork..

Bobby, of  No Monster Club, recent YMLT residents, writes:

“Bubblegum pop nugget ‘I’ve Retired’ featured on No Monster Club’s 2015 album ‘People Are Weird‘.

This new video, by Daniel Martin, follows the journey of the song since its release, from house shows to festivals, via rock clubs and dive bars.

It also depicts the ever-changing cast of No Monster Club, as it flits everywhere from a solo project to a five-piece band.”

No Monster Club’s debut 7″ EP, Where Did You Get That Milkshake?, will be released on Emotional Response Records on September 5.

No Monster ClubDrinking at the Doldrums

What you may need to know…

1. Dublin lo-fi pop project and long-term ‘sheet favourite No Monster Club returns with a new single from last year’s I Feel Magic album.

2. The labour of love of Popical Island’s Bobby Aherne, NMC have been plying their bockety wares for a few years now, having toured with The Polyphonic Spree, Wavves, HEALTH, Jeffrey Lewis, Ariel Pink, and Jeff the Brotherhood, among others.

3. Streaming above is the video for Drinking at the Doldrums. In the band’s own words, it is: “The official No Monster Club videogame – the world’s first ‘choose your own adventure’ in which you are given no options whatsoever”.  Action, action, action.

4. Appearing next on the festival rounds, the band will be at Castlepalooza, Knockstockan and Galway Arts fests. More info here.

Verdict: A grin-inducer for fans of pop and/or dementedly sunshiny melodies of various stripes.

More lo-fi shenanigans out of Dubland.

No Monster Club are launching new album I Feel Magic tonight at the BelloBar [Portobello Harbour, Dublin 2).

Led by Bobby Aherne, the band’s new long-player is available from today on Dublin pop staple Popical Island. It’s his twelfth (!) release under the moniker.

In the video for new single Charity Shop/Slaughterhouse, streaming above, “a mysterious stranger gets to know the few remaining inhabitants of an otherwise abandoned planet”. Some of the locations may be familiar.

Doors open tonight at 8, with music kicking off at 8.30. My Name is Ian and Stephen Star supporting. A tenner in with a copy of the album, €8 without, a fiver if you happen to have a magic wand handy.

Last night’s Fair City.

You may recall.

‘Neasa’ dramatically plugs infectious Dublin scenesters No Monster Club.

It’s a moment every young band craves.

To celebrate, we have ONE No Monster Club t-shirt to giveaway.

Just finish this sentence.

I deserve the No Monster Club T-shirt because…

Lines close at midnight.

Sadly, the band have run out of the model worn on telly by actress Aoibhinn Garrity.  But are offering this one designed by Stephen Martin Graham and brought around Carrigstown, ‘Dublin’, by Bobby (from the band) this afternoon.
