Enjoying the Indian summer?

Well.

“The fifth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has taken years to produce and involved hundreds of scientists, was published this morning. It is meant to guide governments in dealing with rising temperatures. “Delegates said the report raised the probability that most global warming was manmade to 95%, from 90% in its previous report in 2007. “The report concludes that many of the observed changes in climate are unprecedented not just over decades but over millennia. It says oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea levels have risen and concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased. “It found each of the past three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than in any preceding decade since 1850.”
…
“It predicts that by the end of the century, global surface temperatures are likely to increase by at least 1.5C at minimum and over 2C at the higher end. It warns heat waves will occur more frequently and last longer.”

Kerry weightlifter Clarence Kennedy, 20, above, has won three bronze medals at the prestigious European Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tallinn, Estonia – becoming the first Irish weightlifter to win at such a level.

He is now the highest ranked male Irish weightlifter of all time and is already focusing on the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Paddy writes:

“Clarence is self-taught and self-coached. Apart from attending a few training camps in Poland, Clarence’s support is nothing in comparison to that of eastern European countries or even Great Britain, who are able to pay for their athletes to live and train full-time and provide them with stipends. Clarence, to this day, has also not received a single cent from the Irish Sports Council. I don’t think any other Irish athlete has achieved what Clarence has without support from the Irish Sports Council.”

The Kingfisher sequence from RTÉ ‘s The Secret Life of The Shannon, made by Crossing the Line films based in Co Wicklow.

Siobhan Ward writes:

Crossing the Line, have won awards for Best Editing, Best Wildlife Habitat Program and the overall Grand Teton Best of Festival Award for the film ‘On a River in Ireland’ – a film version of the nature documentary series The Secret Life of the Shannon at the world’s leading Wildlife Film Festival; Jackson Hole in Wyoming USA.
Jackson Hole is considered the ‘Oscars’ of wildlife-filmmaking and the Shannon series saw off competition from over 540 films including the BBC’s Africa and Frozen Planet series and Disney’s Chimpanzee feature.
It’s fantastic to see an Irish made documentary about one of Ireland’s greatest landmarks being acknowledged on the world stage.
