I can’t see how they can be offended before they see how the famine is to be approached as comedic material. Of course it could be offensive paddywhackery, but there’s plenty of scope for scathing satire too.
I saw a bit about Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” posted regarding the Charlie Hebdo killings, but it seems fairly apt here too…

I like it.
I only reread Maus last week. Powerful stuff. As for famine humour, well, I’d imagine the trenches in France weren’t much fun, but Blackadder only really seemed to offend Michael Govery (which can only be a good thing).

I haven’t reread Maus in a while it is constantly looking at me from my book shelf but i cannot bring myself to become the bubbling mess i become every time i read it.
Channel 4 made Father Ted. That gives them the benefit of the doubt in this instance. RTE wouldn’t touch it and before it came out, the same concerns about paddywhackery and the English mocking us were made.
If the famine sitcom is any good, we’ll all embrace it and lambast RTE for not having the foresight to make it.
