The NY parade has become an embarrassment, what with the hullabaloo a few years back over gay people marching.

Have you some sort of time machine? If so, perhaps you could pop forward about five years and then let us know how it went? We know how it will go but the a schedule would be good. Tnx.

yeah what a dope. He said something along the lines of – “And if you’re wearing orange today, you’re not welcome inside”

Even on the 6.01 rte news they highlighted “Joe Biden’s gaff before they went inside”.

I am proud to say that I marched behind this banner each of the six years I lived in Manhattan. I believe in a United Ireland, and the first step is for Britain to admit it has no desire to stay. I’m a Dubliner, by the way, before some of the rednecks on this site jump on me

    1. TheMightyOne

plain as the nose on your face that England have no desire to stay man, but at least they’re helping fix it before the inevitable handover.

politics is more complex, and requires quite a bit more thought, than a simple “get out “

    2. CousinJack

      Hope yer proud
Britain doesn’t equal england doesn’t equal UK, the lack of political/historic/geographic/ ethnological about the ‘auld enemy’ in republican and especially american irish circles is frightening, and immediately undermined any cogent argument they might have.
Knowledge makes things complicated – deal

UK nationals are the biggest migrant group in Ireland and we’ve sent plenty of our over too. This whole concept is from a time when the world was very different and it’s insulting to our collective intelligence.

      1. David j

I’m reading a book on Dublin history which includes lots of Irish history and the one thing that has struck me is the amount of immigration from England to Ireland over the last 1000 years. Basically we are all related and if you think you have no English blood in you, you are wrong or a freak. I have recently done my families genealogy and discovered a surname on my mothers side which is English Protestant and arrive in Ireland with Cromwell and I could only go back as far as 1890ish if I could go back further I’m sure I’d find more.

      2. Ultravox

They aren’t the biggest migrant group. Poles are.

The biggest English migrant group in Ireland are students taking advantage of the free fees scheme in universities. Throw a stone in TCD’s Arts Building at random and you’ll hit about 200 of them.

        1. brytothey

So what? There’s a heap of Irish students in Scotland doing the same thing. You sound like the Irish version of UKIP.

        2. Stephanenny

No, the second largest nationality in Ireland is people from the UK according to the 2011 census. Also students from the UK don’t get free fees here, they have to pay EU level fees. Those from England don’t even get the student loans they get if they go to college in the UK.

        3. WibblyWobblyWilbur

There is no free fees scheme for English or Welsh students, only Scottish and Central Europe (apart from Switzerland and a few other places). Same as in Scotland, only English and Welsh have to pay. They pay on average 7000 euro a year in fees alone for what is an essentially a joke of a university sailing on its prestige as opposed to academic merit. The amount of money English students bring into the economy is astronomical. Awful lot of them are wankers but, as we can see from you, there are wankers everywhere. Please don’t let you bias and bigotry get in the way if the facts.

      1. Someone

I’m here in the deep south (ya’ll) about 3 years, but my transformations only happen on full moons.

    4. Nice Anne (Dammit)

Well done you. I really mean it.
Well done for getting out there and seeing the wider world.
Well done on making your way in one of the biggest countries in the world, quite an intimidating task for the uniniciated.
Well done on going and living in one of the biggest melting pots of peoples faiths, skin colours and orientations there is…..

Well done on doing all this and still remaining a little islander bigot in your opinions. That takes some doing.
Any chance you could get some of the other bigots left behind to follow your path and FuppedyByeOuttaIt too?

      Sláinte…

whats the problem, these banner holders have a beef with the english crown claiming a part of Ireland, it’s been going on for quiet a few centuries now, in fairness

  4. Wayne Carr

I suppose the argument, very cleverly suggesting by those holding the banner, is that the Empire (British Empire) was to be more correctly viewed as the English Empire.

And that’s despite the fact that the jocks, paddys, and… eh, Welsh played their part in establishing it, maintaining it, and eventually fighting to keep it in place.

    1. CousinJack

That view is ahistorical, significant drivers of british imperialism came from the celtic countries; a review of the number of irish slavers (relative english) would be one amongst numerous others. History is very often inconvenient

“And that’s despite the fact that the jocks, paddys, and… eh, Welsh played their part in establishing it, maintaining it, and eventually fighting to keep it in place.”

45% of Scots want England out of Scotland. England is dominant in the so called United Kingdom.

The Americans use “England”, rather than Britain/UK, in many contexts. I presume it goes back to the 18th century, or further.

    1. PPads

Ask yourself why on this M&S product they state their low fat content while hiding high levels of sugar?

  6. Pedantic Pat

As i posted earlier! Leprechaun hats. Red beards and sideburns. When we will show ourselves some respect and stop with the ‘Punch’ imagery! And no im not trolling!

    1. Clampers Outside!

Yeah, what Pat said, all the kids today were just embarrassed by all the face paint and costumes, leprechaun hats, red beards and sideburns. It was a disgrace Joe, Joe, really it was just horrific the lack of self respect… and in front of the childer Joe! Jaysus fupp Joe, in front of the childer!

      Joe!

      IN,

we need to find a nice green, the green on the flag is wrong, the cheap paddys day green is wrong, the dart’s green is wrong, the soccer teams green is wrong, the rugby teams green is wrong, i think the green uniform that collins wore was nice, it had a touch of mohair / yellow ochre about it…

  7. Hector Ramirez

Seriously, we can’t fund the 26 we have. We bitch and moan about the 26 we have….

Sometimes our citizens can’t get off the island fast enough and we want another 6.

        1. Gasur

As a young Irish man I’m getting an ill feeling just reading this thread and will take a break reading it after making this post; You’d think around St Patrick’s day there’d be somekind of buoyancy of pride about us, because God there’s a lot of harsh self-criticism in here.

I reckon it’s a generation gap to be honest; My friend and I are pretty proud to be Irish, but I get the impression older Irish people are very, very hard on themselves and our people.

          – Young Lad with no plans to ever emigrate; Will raise family here.

        2. Stephanenny

Always amazed at how hard core republicans claim people who are fine with partition hate themselves. Buddy, we’re the ones who are happy with things as they are. We’re not the ones who think there was some kind of collective national failure in not getting those six counties. I think w3 did quite well actually. Yay us!

    1. PPads

“WE” don’t want another six, WE already have them. Remember that topic in skool called Geography? Besides someone built the best road in Ireland all the way to Bainbridge. Pity about the Outlet centre mind.
I think the point is that who want to leave the Island are free to go but they need not expect a welcome home. Go travel if you wish but don’t shit on your own door step because people are queuing up to live here now.

    2. Formerly known as @ireland.com

      @Hector

Don’t worry, you are on the right side of the border. Just pretend that the other 6 counties aren’t in Ireland. That way, you can feel smug.

I was in the states a short while ago and got talking to a third generation Irish woman. She regaled me about her time in the aul sod and told me about the places she had been, how beautiful it was, and then said how she had been all over, but not to the occupied territories.

I was totally confused, and then realised she was talking about Northern Ireland.

It weirded me out at first, but then I realised that her ancestors who had told her about Ireland had ever right to be anti English, and had an idea of Ireland that has long since disappeared for most of us. I couldn’t really blame her it. I think there’s a whole generation of yanks who think there’s still some kind of romantic conflict going on here just because their grandparents or great grandparents came over at a time when England was a genuine enemy of Ireland.
