“He had been drinking, excessively, prior to arriving at the apartment. [Hanahoe] suffers from blackouts after excessive drinking and does not remember anything that occurred when he got home,” his lawyer wrote in court papers last year.
The lawyer added that Hanahoe suffered six concussions when he played rugby in Ireland, which would be a part of his “intoxication blackout defence.”
Hanahoe faced 25 years behind bars, but he pleaded guilty last month to the lesser charge of criminal sex act.

When blackouts are no longer an excuse, I mean, ‘defence’ for any crime… we’ll end up with jails full of all the stupid people.
Then we can turn off all the lights and heating in the Siberian jail these eejits are sent to…. and when they all die of hypothermia we can blame it on a burst pipe…. that caused a blackout…. or something.

What a load of poo
This is obviously another example of the twisted plea bargain system in the US. Faced 25 years but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. Being accused in the US is a case of guilty until proven innocent. Proving yourself innocent is gambling with a lifetime.
