Hypnotic gif featuring greasy, gold chain-laden gombeen Hugh McElvaney on last night’s RTÉ Investigates.
The former mayor of Monaghan left Fine Gael to become an independent over a “pylon matter” last week.

I’d say he left after pressure was piled on him.
a pylon cash, amirite?
Is there ANYONE in office who isn’t on the take in some way? Seriously. If we don’t start handing out jail terms at this stage then there really is no hope of any change for this nation at all………..EVER. This is it now. Last straw. Of course the usual response these days is depressed apathy and talk of leaving the country for a better life elsewhere. I can’t blame folk. I think that way too. It’s a response born out of a long term feeling of utter helplessness with regards to dealing with corruption here. But we really are going to be handing on a terrible legacy to the next generation if these parasites are not dealt with. A generation that will grow up thinking corruption is just part of the system and cannot/ should not be fought. The Gardai need to BE ABLE to step up, laws need changing and we really NEED to clean house. But a good start, how you can help at home, would be not voting FG/FF or Lab next election. And I doubt Sinn Fein will bring about any positive change either.
and where does that leave us , getting a load of independents to work together , or the Greens? lol..
Well then we better ignore everything and maintain the status quo!! lol!!
Im sure dan boyle will be regaling us with his ‘i told you so’ soon enough.
Well said Eoin..
About – “laws need changing ”
The current laws are sufficient to deal with corruption.
There’s a Prevention of Corruption Act 2001 –
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2001/act/27/enacted/en/html
Just not enforced.
Ireland, the best little country to be corrupt in.
Kudos on the title.
Los del Rio, The McElvaney shuffle, Hey McElvaney.
Section 8 there – ‘Corruption in Office’
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2001/act/27/section/8/enacted/en/html#sec8
<I8.—(1) A public official who does any act in relation to his or her office or position for the purpose of corruptly obtaining a gift, consideration or advantage for himself, herself or any other person, shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable—
(a) on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding £2,362.69 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both, or
(b) on conviction on indictment, to a fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or to both.
(2) In this section—
“consideration” includes valuable consideration of any kind;
“public official” means a person referred to in subsection (5)(b) of section 1 (inserted by section 2 of this Act) of the Act of 1906.
Oh look that looks like Sterling McElvaney – £2,362.69.. Steeeeerliiiiing. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Does he pay fines in Sterling?
10 years. hmmmm
Da Bert was the same with the Sterling wasn’t he?
A bit of a fondness for her majesty maybe…
Fab. So the law is in place. Well that’s a start. I’m voting independent this time for the simple reason that party’s get a whip and then they seem to inevitably get compromised and come to represent special interests over here. At least if we have a Dail full of independents we can be sure that anything that does get passed has at least been well debated. Yes, indeed they’ll agree on nothing most probably, but they’ll have to figure out how to function as a government or it’ll be back to the old ways. I think it’s worth a shot.
You’re kidding, right? A Dail full of independents, like Michael Lowrey? The country would fall apart under a tidal wave of corruption before a week had passed. Populist nonsense is not a practical alternative to corrupt officials. Dealing with corruption by handing out severe fines and/or prison sentences on them is what’s needed. The culture of dealing with corruption within the political ranks and dishing out no more than a slap on the wrist needs to stop. Switching the entire Dail to independents will not change that.
I believe the Social Democrats might just be the most trustworthy for my vote, when the time comes. The rest of the Political parties are all tainted. Tainted!
You know one of the good ol’ boys caught red handed ni the RTE special was an independant right?
@rotide
You’re right. No one is incorruptible. Just because a politician has no party affiliation it does not mean that they will never accept a bribe. I’d much rather see enforcement of the law. Less of the ‘one law for us, another for them’ mentality. I’d prefer if the people who gambled with billions of other people’s money were brought to justice, and the public figures who accepted bribes and allowed their decisions be swayed by personal gain rather than the betterment of society. If someone could offer that kind of change, they’d have my vote. And I doubt that the youth of FF can pull it off.
Agree with all of that but just a niggle, people gamble with billions of other peoples money perfectly legally every day, you’re talking about people who do it illegally :)
Exactly. I left out the crucial word in my excitement. We hear the word accountability a lot these days. But really, if there were any kind of accountability in this country the social, economic and political atmosphere would be rather different to the one we have today.
Voting for the current or past shower of crooks is just giving them the OK to carry on. I wich there was a better alternative, but I’ll vote anything but FF/FG/Labour in the next election.
Just say it. You’re voting Sinn Fein. It’s not a sin.
County Monaghan is full of fuel and livestock smugglers. A county laden with criminals of all shapes and sizes, all playing the border and tax differences, etc. Loads of them are into waste collection and ‘disposal’. In fact waste collection is an industry which was more or less given to many ex IRA as a bribe to get them to go ‘legit’. The licenses weren’t properly tendered and some of businesses have become very big since and operate nationally.
This bloated sausage will get voted back in again. He’s “Their” man.
This guy has a waste disposal business.
Heyyyyyy Macarena! Aarite.
…Elaine Byrne did the best summing up on radio this morning when she claimed McElvaney was making the ‘Kilnascully Defense’…brilliant.
Corrupt Culchie Gombeens! Thats the problem in Ireland. In fairness there’s been a few from Dublin too, but not as many, or as blatant. We need to start jailing these corrupt, dirty muckers. An example has to be set.
Apart from trying to foment an even greater rural/urban divide, your desire for justice is appreciated.
Thank you my good man. It just seems that in Rural Ireland, laws, inspections, tax declarations all go out the window! There’s no one policiing the politicians! Never mind the farm burglars, I suppose the normal, honest people who live in these rural areas must get very frustrated, especially with the Land zoning and building site corruption in their communities. I had to pause the RTE investigates video, too much steam coming out of my ears
An understandable response: I despise this sort of behaviour.
Worth the licence fee. Enemies of the State and all of its citizens. These fuppin Gangsters are the driving force behind all the privatisation of state services, rezonings, barbaric hospital conditions, no mental health policy of any worth etc etc.. Electorate needs a serious look at itself.
I would like to have this GIF playing on a digital photo frame mounted in my downstairs jaxx, forever, to remind me why I’m living here ‘for a while like, til Ireland changes honey’.
The McElvaney Waltz
He’s actually semi conscious, that’s pure muscle memory in action right there
