‘We Have A Whistleblower’

Unsuccessful Independent general election candidate for Mayo Gerry O’Boyle

Further to yesterday’s post

The Mayo News reports:

A defeated Mayo candidate in the general election is to launch a High Court bid to have the constituency’s result declared null and void and a new election called.

Independent candidate Gerry O’Boyle received just 126 first preference votes, but he claims ‘there was a thousand votes robbed off me’.

Mr O’Boyle further claims that he lost a lot of votes in Claremorris and Ballyhaunis, claiming votes went ‘missing’ sometime between the polling stations closing on Friday night and the count starting in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on Saturday morning.

Ballyhaunis-based O’Boyle said he is lodging High Court application papers this week and applying to get the ‘General Election Mayo four-seater recalled as a new election’.

“I’ve had people contact me from all over the county who said they voted for me and it didn’t come through. I’m not in this to get a seat. I know my vote wouldn’t be that high, but I expected to get 1,000 to 1,200 first preferences,” Mr O’Boyle told The Mayo News last night.

For instance, in the Crossboyne box I have nine dead certs there, and only one vote came up on the tally. We have a whistleblower in relation to what I am saying, but I am not willing to say any more about the whistleblower, as there is a legal case pending. We’ve enough evidence. Independents were targeted. You might think I’m mad, but I’m not. It was a total fraud,” he added.

…“Something went wrong. I’m not a whinger. I’m a fair sport player. I can take my beating. I’m not a child throwing my rattle out of the cradle. I know I’m right here,” he said.

I don’t know this chap but I bet he puts his tie around his head and only dances to Madness at weddings.

whoa whoa whoa there, Tex…as a Madness fan, I resemble that comment.

(as it happens, I sorta know the guy as well, but that’s beside the point…)

        I love Madness too.
The Liberty of Norton Folgate is one of my favourite ever albums.
        But you know the type…
trousers pulled up to the knees, tie on the head, stomping around like a CJD bull.

The ones who form a sweaty circle for “don’t you forget about me” yep.

It just seems like a case of people told him they’ed vote for him, and then didn’t. Or worse, they put an X in his box instead of 1.

It’ll be an awkward Christmas dinner this year as he tries to find out who didn’t vote for him.

    1. neil

If you place an X in only one box, that will usually be interpreted as a first preference vote. Candidates or their representatives get to look at and argue over the doubtful votes, with returning officer adjudicating.

      “I’ll give you my vote.”
      “The cheque’s in the post.”
“It was like that when I got here.”
“I’ll only put it in a little bit.”

    3. Hugh

For your information, an X in the box is a valid & accepted vote, if that is the only box marked & no others.

  3. Liam

Even if this tinfoil-hattery was true, an extra 1000 votes still wouldn’t have got him elected.

  4. The Real Jane

So he has a family of 9 and he’s the only one who voted O’Boyle, despite all the breakfast table promises.

“Yeah, I’ll vote for you, Da!!”

    I will, yeah.

  5. Old Bawn

    Does look quite gullible.

“Yes, Gerry, ‘course Gerry, number 1 Gerry, no bother”

  6. pissedasanewt

He’s not saying it would get him elected, but somebody said they voted for him and the vote disappeared. Now, if it turns out that of the 9 votes, 8 people managed to spoil their vote.. that would be funny.

  7. Cup of tea anyone?

They laughed at Wallace when he made claims of wrong doings in Nama. I wouldn’t put anything buy them in fairness.

But if you are going to mess with the vote would you not take votes from your competitor not the independent who would easily notice?

      1. Cup of tea anyone?

I cant tell if you are taking the mick because I use buy instead of by, or actually asking?

He is accusing the government of fixing the election in Mayo. So I am talking about the government.

        1. newsjustin

          No, I was really asking.

He doesn’t say anything about the government. Perhaps he’s not quite sure who stole the votes.

          1. Cup of tea anyone?

            Actually it was the
Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people under the supervision of the reverse vampires…..

We’rethrough the looking glass, here, people

          2. Reverend Lovejoy

You fool! Can’t you see it’s a massive government conspiracy?
Or have they gotten to you too?

    1. TheDude

Blueshirts were looking to frame him back in 2011 to keep him out of the 2016 race, this is like OJ all over again

  8. collynomial

I’m not saying I believe him or not, but I do think if he can file the papers with the court, it has to be examined. Unfortunately for him it sounds like a lot of hearsay and it probably won’t go very far.

    1. Sam

All he’s got is that he didn’t get votes from places he thought he would.
If the number of ballots counted equals the number of votes cast in the polling stations, then where’s his evidence for a missing 1000 ballots?

Given the ‘stolen BMW saga’ in the story linked above, I wouldn’t be holding my breath for his ‘whistleblower’ to materialise.

  9. Baz

This is the person who ran in the by election in Roscommon-he told Primetime in a debate that he was running as he was ‘raised on spuds and politics’
I often wondered what happen to him..thanks Broadsheet for getting that nagging question out of my mind!

  10. Patsy8

I’m a resident of Ballyhaunis and of this I am quite certain.
I won’t claim us to be always of the soundest mind but even we didn’t have 1000 dribbling idiots whose tablets had been withheld long enough to be sufficiently addled to vote for this man.
