People Before Profit/Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Richard Boyd Barrett picks apart the government’s vulture fund housing policy to the visible chagrin of Housing Minister Simon Coveney during today’s leaders’ questions.

Richard Boyd Parrot has it easy because he doesn’t need to use figures that reflect reality like the Govt. are obliged to do.

On a side note, when do people in accommodation stop being homeless?

“because he doesn’t need to use figures that reflect reality like the Govt. are obliged to do.”

Er AFAIK the figures are the department’s own and Richard Bruton was today telling the Dáil that housing starts were increasing when the most recent figures (Novembers) showed they had fallen 25% (and 39% in Dublin, which he also said were increasing), so either he has the wrong figures, or the right ones but is choosing to lie, but sure never mind that Barrett rhymes with parrot, that’s the main thing here.

“AFAIK” doesn’t influence the facts of the case. Your personal opinion is of scant interest to those more focused on what the reality is ,

RBB is dead right.. But talking to a free marketeer about social housing is like talking to a Mormon about going on a pub crawl. As long as FG and to a lesser extent FF are in power, housing will be a commodity that enriched a small elite.

Your messing right. Years and years of FF policy pushing up house prices while lower building cost and standards might have something to do with it. So its not a lesser extent.

yeah them blushirts have had nothing to do with it, they’ve just been in power over the last years picking clingy pieces of faeces out of each others arses as they governed the nation…

        1. Anomanomanom

What blue shirts, do you mean FG? I never said they had nothing to do with it, I was pointing out its not a lesser extent with regards FF.

Listening to Grapes of Wrath audiobook at the moment. It’s clear while the level of destitution may have changed (slightly?) since 1930s America, the idea behind making folks destitute and keeping them dispossessed hasn’t.

It’s a disgrace what they’ve done to ordinary working people in this country in terms of housing.

There’s been a deliberate policy of enriching these vultures at the expense of the Irish citizen.

The Irish have been thrown to the wolves by FG and senile c*** Baldy Noonan.

What did they do, to ensure ordinary people couldn’t buy a house? When you want to enrich your buddies with the money, the ones wining and dining Baldy Noonan in New York – they Bring in a policy that you needed a 20% deposit. Like anyone would realistically have a hope of saving a fifth of the price of a house, unless they come from money.
That’s not interfering in the market somehow.

The avoidance of tax via Section 110 Special Purpose Vehicle for these vultures, is not interfering in the market. Nama itself.. that’s not interfering in the market.
Bring in proper rent controls and it’s interfering in the market.
The whole game is rigged from top to bottom with these shower of ar se holes. Having a roof over your head is a fupping commodity used to enslave you for the rest of your days, and that’s if you’re lucky.
Otherwise, off to a run down B& B with you and the other plebs.

    Shower of despicable w*ankers.

For once we agree, not on everything but 99%. Especially the bloody law allowing basically tax free profit, disgraceful.

NAMA has been selling off property and development sites at discount since 2009…. why has it taken until now for the penny to drop with this shower of thickos. The whole exercise was a protection of the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Is that news to anyone but the profoundly stupid?

  7. timble

There isn’t a shortage of land for homes and that’s why the NAMA line is drivel. Dublin City council alone is sitting on massive land banks. There is an incapacity to build social housing because the function was outsourced to private developers through Part V throughout the celtic tiger period. Councils ran down their own house building programme and the staff who built housing in the 80s and 90s retired or moved elsewhere, and the institutional memory was lost of how to do it. Its taken quite some time to build it back up. Also learning the lessons from bad planning in the past, its set policy not to have 100% social housing estates. Thats why its taking so long to build it back up.

      Be careful with these truths,
      Nothing’s very simple,
      Broadsheet’s proletariat,
Will squash Timble like a Pimple.

The population of Dublin has increased by 5.7% between 2011 and 2016. From 1,273K to 1,345K (+72,333). this is broken down as:
    – Dublin City +25,553
    – Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown +11,013
    – Fingal +22,223
    – South Dublin +13,544

There are seventy two thousand more people housed in Dublin now than there were 5 years ago.

Yes, there are more homeless, but the fact remains that there are more housed.

The problem today is a lack of new buildings. The population is increasing more quickly than the housing stock. So demand is outstripping supply. So prices are increasing.
