Like many scammers*, they dupe you once without reaction (in this case a ‘reaction’ would be considered changing insurers), they will come back again and again until they bleed you dry.

*I’m not saying this or any insurance company are scammers, just likening their behavior to typical scam artist’s behavior.

yeah – there was a bloke wrote a letter to the papers a while back (think it was featured here actually) where he said that he’s had ‘decent’ premium for yonks but on the basis that he’s changed insurer every year.

there’s no doubt that the ‘shop around’ thing is a pain in the hole. You need to set aside an evening at the kitchen table nowadays, and do it three weeks before you’re due to be renew. They won’t all display a quote on the screen at the end of the process (which sucks) but rather they’ll want to call you or email you, both of which are rather intrusive and make one less inclined to want to do this but it’s worth the bother.

I knocked around 500 quid off LAST YEARS house and car insurance premiums (and was kicking myself for not doing it previously), so that meant two switchings.

As I say, it’s tedious in the extreme and it’s not something you do in what’s left of your lunchbreak. But a few hundred quid savings for a few hours work? Well worth it.

Oh and they’ve started to discriminate against people who won’t pay car insurance premium in full as well. As in (far as i can tell) it’s not just that you get a discount for paying in full, but they seem to be playing with your likelihood to have an accident (and thus your premium) if you’re the kind of person who pays month on month.

Yes for many but NO! for a lot of people. Depending where you live you will not see any benefits – or not that much – from shopping around.

        1. ivan

          Perhaps.

I cited my own instance and nothing more and it’s true that you’re not guaranteed to do better by shopping around.

On the other hand, if you don’t, then you’re *definitely* stuck with paying thru the nose.

Well, I’ve managed to keep my premium down to an almost sensible level by shopping around every time (except one odd year about three years ago when the premium remained the same – don’t know what went wrong there).

More often than not, it’s well worth the few hours it takes (for me, at any rate).

My quote from the company (Aviva) who I’ve been with for years was 12500, 6 years+ nocliams etc…. went to another company backed by RSA exact same cover 700…..!

    “how can you justify? #carinsurance”
a complaint government who’s support of “the market” leads to vulture funds paying the same taxes as charities and families being evicted.
Their inability to do anything with the gouging of the insurance companies yet they can bail out the bondholders in the blink of an eye….

How come you’re ultra left wing when it comes to Irish politics but alt-right when it comes to foreign politics?

Do you forget to change your username?

I’m more interested in how his seemingly rather innocuous comment calling you a “liberal” got deleted.

Are the management using something akin to sock puppets?

          1. jusayinlike

I assure you I am no sock puppet, however my views are not normal and do require a certain level of management, I happily leave that to bodger whom I broadly agree with..

The AA are no better and no worse. They tried a 90% increase on me last year and played the old “we’re just the broker, it’s the underwriters who are the problem”. I responded with “Company X have given me a quote that is the same as last year” and they quickly changed their tune. It shouldn’t be such a crap shoot every year. It should be boring and predictable.

FYI my 90% increase was proposed after zero claims, zero penalty points, full NCT and a full no claims.

Nothing surprises me anymore with regards to insurance companies. They are all involved in some sort of price gouging and extortionate behaviour. It is allowed to happen by the Irish Gov’t as nowhere else in Europe has prices like this. So a lot needs to change to make it affordable for your average worker. They need to tackle the legal system end of it, the solicitors involved get paid crazy money, as well as payouts for whiplash in Ireland being treble the average of a UK payout. There seems to be a very nasty system in place where the Insurance companies make a killing, the solicitors make a killing, the claimants with whiplash (or not) make a killing, and the average insurance customer pays for it all.

Also car insurance companies have openly started descriminating against people with cars more than 10 years old even though they have passed their NCT tests!!? WTF?? Again, Gov’t does nothing.

How quaint, some think ‘our’ government represents the interests of it’s citizens, isn’t it gas what people still think, even after years of contrary evidence being stomped repeatedly into your face….it’s always a wonder why we’re so placidly complient and almost thoroughly devoid of any radical thought, is it a fear of embarrassment? Or just fear.
    Greasy Gougers.

  5. Turgenev

Pity there are so many powerful interests against putting car tax, insurance and NCT on the price of fuel. Doing so would mean everyone would be insured, taxed and NCT-funded, and the more you drove the more you paid.

gougers. claim awards have always been excessive here..it doesn’t justify the massive gouging that’s going on. Huge profits being made at our expense.

“THE COMPETITION AND Consumer Protection Commission has summoned motor insurance providers to appear to give evidence over suspected breaches of competition law.” That was in 2016.

Someone should survey how many public servants are employed in the protection of consumer rights in this republic. The central bank has a whole department.
