Hot Press Founder Niall Stokes (top) and members of rock tykes The Strypes open a major Hot Press covers exhibition as part of the magazine’s year-long HP40 birthday celebrations.

On designing the first cover in 1977, Niall Stokes writes:

It is impossible to convey in mere words the difference between then and now for graphic designers. I’m not saying that life is a doddle for the maestros of InDesign and Photoshop who ply their trade these days. No indeed.

But back in 1977 it was pure hell.

Every. Thing. Had. To. Be. Done. Deliber. A. Tely. By. Hand. Especially headlines, which were pressed painstakingly and laboriously (you needed to avoid words like that in headlines but we didn’t) out of sheets of ‘Letraset’ (don’t ask) with the tip of a biro, onto flimsy see-through paper against the background of a grid, to keep them (ho, ho) straight….[more at link below[

Tellypanel

Did you stay up?

A firm handshake to, above from left: Neil Curran, Mike McGrath Bryan and Johnny Keenan, our all-male panel from last night’s Broadsheet on the Telly.

Owing to a number last minute cancellations and [frown] a few ‘no shows’ we were left without women for only the second time in the show’s history.

Subjects manfully wrestled included a bit of Fennelly, Irish Water protests and foreign direct investment. Much boyish enthusiasm, towel snapping and ‘sailor talk’ ensued.

You can watch the show in its entirety above.

On April 20, we will be hosting a ‘Reefer Special’ about pot in Ireland. If you are a midnight toker or simply interested in the ‘erb’s medicinal properties and would like to take part please send short bio to broadsheet@broadsheet.ie marked ‘Broadsheet on the Telly.

Thanks all.

It’s been a good work for fans of decent irish hip-hop, with two big live gatherings getting releases over social media this week.

Write the shadowy enmascarado bosses from the Unscene:

Back in January we unleashed Mankyy’s ‘Character Development’ EP, a debut release perhaps most remarkable for its artistic maturity, not only on the production front but also from the assembled cast of young rappers Aswell, Jonen Dekay & Same D4Ence alongside the more grizzled vet Spekulativ Fiktion. A few weeks back we gathered for a post-release get together at Music Generation Limerick City HQ, here’s a taste of what went down. Big ups Stephen Savage on the vid!

Meanwhile, over at 2fm last week, Friday-night beatslinger Mo K. presented the second in his series of live on-air cyphers, featuring multi-man verbal throwdowns featuring Big Siyo, Ger Kellett, Nugget, Linco & Kreo Ghost. Streaming in its entirety above right now.

Harcourt Street Garda Station, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2

Newly ‘forensically-enhanced’ VHS footage of cctv showing the moments Trevor Deely was last recorded on camera.

It features a man talking to Trevor outside the rear entrance of Bank of Ireland Asset Management offices on Wilton Terrace, Dublin 2 during a Christmas party at the bank in the early hours of December 8th, 2000.

And later, what may be the same man is seen following Trevor in nearby Haddington Road, Dublin 4 where he was last seen.
