Statue of Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria, in the grounds of Leinster House

Further to the direct action taken against his wife earlier this week.

Via Ken Foxe:

Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin urging the bronze statue of Prince Albert be taken to a museum to ‘make more room for parking’.

Which elicited the following….

The statue is a ‘protected structure’, says the Superintendent of The Houses of the Oireachtas

Protected?

FIGHT!

Meanwhile…

Ken writes:

Response from Oireachtas also shows how some TDs and Senators are not parking where they are supposed to….

Why can’t they be like the rest of the plebs and get the bus in? Wouldn’t have to worry about parking at all then.

Nail on the head there. How can we expect any decent public transport or cycling infrastructure if the TDs are more concerned about parking their motors?

      1. Rob_G

Ah now – I am into cycling activism, and have absolutely no time for SF, but I can see how a TD living in a rural constituency could justify sometimes taking their car into Leinster House.

        1. ReproBertie

Many constituents of rural TDs have to commute to Dublin for work without the benefit of free city centre parking and not all the TDs that drive are rural.

        2. DeKloot

There are very few people who work in the city centre who have access to permanent and free parking. I agree that the bus is not an option, but there are lots of pay parking options that can be utilised. No, he’s looking for free, easy and privileged parking based on his perception that his job as a TD should afford him.

i’m sure he knows someone, who knows someone, who knows where to get their hands on a wee smidge of semtex..

Cian, you’ll be accused of being homophobic, just as BB was yesterday, prepare for an onslaught of “Scream it from the rooftops” postings.

      1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

        Whuuuuuuuut? Bell-end isn’t a gay slur. It’s a great slur.

        1. Bernie

Andy, certain posters look for offence in everything, it’s attention seeking is all.

A Prince Albert is a well known item of jewellery predominantly worn by gay males.

            oh right… yer man

of all the things I’ve been called on BS – many true – that one is completely wrong

          2. scottser

i think i started that. i learned later on that the heraldic lions are in fact leopards. go figure, eh?

      2. SOQ

Bb wasn’t accused of anything yesterday Bernie as you well know, it was pi$$ take of that other clown johnny and bb was well in on the joke.

Actually it was him who made the joke.

        1. Bernie

BB It was uncalled for, it was clear it was said with humour.

SOQ No need backtrack a day later. Another drunken rant? Now there’s a surprise. Doesn’t sound as though he was in on the ‘joke’ to me. Only one clown here.

          1. SOQ

            Drunken rant? Err yes dear.

All I asked was if he had contracted something anti social, like homophobia. If you don’t see the humour in that then no hope

Anyways back to the Prince Albert, bloody uncomfortable if you ask me.

Sorry, that was cheeky. I take it back. I’m a fraction giddy today.

Interesting the latter part of the letter about the history of the two statues – funny that Victoria (the Famine queen, after all) was removed, but inoffensive Albert was able to ‘brazen it out’, as it were.

  4. Conski

if they removed the hedging either side of the offensive statue, then the deputy could freely park in aice le Prince Albert

  5. SOQ

What does listed actually mean anyways?

The arches at Stephen Green are listed but so are other things in that Park which could not possibly have been returned once the Metro North station was built.

    It’s a genuine question btw.

Would Germany be a better place to send Mr. Albert Saxe-Coburg as he was from there, unlikely that they would want him though, being a proper, relatively well-run Republic and all..
