Housing activists outside 38/39 Bolton Street in 2015
Lois Kapila, in The Dublin Inquirer, reports:
Three years ago, when housing activists stood down from their occupation of 38 and 39 Bolton Street after the council took them to court for trespassing, they didn’t feel too bad, says Séamus Farrell.
Dublin City Council had said the buildings – which it owns – would be turned into accommodation for people who were homeless. That was something they could rally behind, said Farrell.
But it hasn’t happened yet.
The two tall buildings in the north inner-city are still empty, with boarded-up windows and shuttered doors, and advertising posters plastered to the front wall.
“It’s not surprising, it’s disappointing,” says Farrell, an activist who was involved at the time. He is now among those who have taken over a Georgian building on Summerhill Parade…

How the hell did we go from demolishing ghost estates to a housing shortage????
Because we still haven’t learned the vital importance of proper planning.
Location, location, location.
I get so depressed by the inability of Dublin City Council to do business with itself.
The artist who lived in that quirky house next to the Epicurean (now Dealz) on Abbey St fought the Council for years to keep that house. They finally turfed him out about 10 years ago and it’s just sitting there rotting ever since. I was in it a few times, it’s a MASSIVE house that could be turned into several flats but instead it’s been left empty.
DCC planning search shows approval for the new owner to renovate 47 Middle Abbey St since Feb 2016.
Get a move on, Mr Bradley apparantly.
I once attended a lively soiree there also – could have been ye’r man’s farewell do. I remember thinking the whole place might come down. I hope the new works start before it does…
go new zealand.

Don’t go to New Zealand. You won’t be allowed to buy a house.
You can’t even go to the cinema in pyjamas or onesies.
I didn’t realise that the Epicurean food hall had been replaced by Dealz. Kinda gladdens my heart.
