Perfidious Albion, Duplicitous Hibernia

at

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and British Prime Minister Theresa May at No. 10 Downing Street in 2017

“Where they see perfidious Albion, the British see duplicitous Hibernia, and have been given just as much reason to do so.

A guarantee against a hard border, perfectly legitimate for stand-alone economic and security reasons, has instead been demanded to “protect the Belfast Agreement in all its parts”, although no part of the agreement requires it.

Securing this demand via Brussels has been proclaimed by the Irish Government as a diplomatic triumph and the centrepiece of its Brexit strategy.

At the same time Stormont has collapsed and Sinn Féin is demanding a Border poll; the Taoiseach has erroneously threatened “a form of joint authority” via the agreement’s east-west body, the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference; Brexit has been described as breaching the consent principle, although the legal inaccuracy of this could scarcely be clearer; and every effect on cross-Border co-operation has been portrayed as violating the agreement rather than just impacting certain bodies within their remit.

No wonder unionists in particular suspect the Irish of seizing their moment…”

Meanwhile…

Motorists may soon be obliged to carry ‘proof of insurance’ Green Cards for travel in the UK and Northern Ireland in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland has advised that insurers and insurance brokers will provide ‘Green Cards’ to motor insurance policyholders who travel to the UK, including to Northern Ireland.

Insurance green cards are all well and good but under a No Deal Sasamach will an EU driving licence even be accepted in the UK? Are we back to needing an international driving licence to go watch Leinster hammer Ulster in Ravenhill? Presumably the UK will also get right on the process of issuing new UK driving licences while trying to strike a deal with the EU to recognise them.

It’s quite simple for a country’s licensing authority to choose acceptable licenses…therefore there should be no problem with the UK accepting EU documentation. Holidaymakers and emigrants planning to drive in countries outside of the EU would rightly check the list in the host country. For some, a national AND an international license is required.

“Should be no problem” still requires some actual action though. Are they planning anything for March 30th? Do UK subjects have the right to an EU licence in the event of a No Deal Sasamach?

Well if they are still killing each other over what sort of relationship they want with the EU, how in God’s name can they plan let alone implement these sorts of things?

now look here, newton emerson, if that is indeed your real name. we’re not insistent on preventing a hard border to pull a fast one on the Brits for the lols, nor is it an angle at claiming back the North (though that does quietly contribute, I’m sure).

We don’t want to bring the Troubles back. Remember them? Death? Terror? Horror? Lifetimes of stress and territorialism?

‘Seizing their moment’? Is that what you call ‘trying to sustain a fragile peace and favourable trading conditions for both countries in the face of your neigbhbour going totally bananas?’ What does Mr Emerson, voice of our confused ‘Britain forever but we voted to remain’ unionist brethren expect a country to do if not defend its own interests?

Backstop was agreed by Britain, and signed up to. Newton loves to come across as such a reasonable sort, until the default Unionist in him is triggered, and he starts writing nonsense.

Yeah, it just shows how far the ‘liberal’ unionist mind has come.. or not..!! They are living down the rabbit hole and all that are capable of now is more digging.. they’ll be no loss to the race.

The tories have made a complete bollix of this entire thing and now are scrambling around trying to place the blame somewhere else.
