German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at a press conference in Farmleigh House last night.
“A heavy death toll has been paid here in the Troubles. What I have heard here will encourage me further to explore ways and means to continue to explore this peaceful coexistence.
For 34 years I lived behind the Iron Curtain so I know only too well what it means once borders vanish, once walls fall…”

Meanwhile…
Yeah, because Northern Ireland and East Germany, controlled by the Soviets, is *exactly* the same thing. Yep, absolutely. https://t.co/6kZGeMcKdI

Last night: Sie Ist Unter Uns
Big picture Julia, big picture.
No Julia, NI is controlled by the DUP which is even worse.
Thanks SOQ for the laugh-out-loud moment on a grey Friday morning!
Aye, the Norn Iron Curtain

May just asked the EU for further extension until 30 June…
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-47825841
Wasn’t 30 June the date she asked for originally, before the EU said April 12/May 22? If so, is this a repeat of the standard May approach to negotiation: keep coming back asking for the same thing and expecting a different answer?
Not going to happen, unless she commits to EU elections. So then you’ll have elections a week before departure? Even more weird.
And you’ll have around 500 people campaigning in the UK for a job that may never even start. And what happens to Ireland, will there be 11 MEP seats or 13?
What I took from her statement was that when walls/borders come down freedoms improve: freedom of movement, of employment, of possibility. Not a statement that the political systems were the same prior to 1989.
What is clear is that if there is a no-deal Brexit defacto borders will arise and our current freedom of movement and access across all of Europe, not just the EU countries, will be greatly curtailed.
I get the impression that Julia knows absolutely sfa about it.
Someone had to tell her that Ireland isn’t part of the UK, didn’t they?
She may be related to that guy Peter on LBC who reckoned than answer is to invade Northern Ireland…

Perhaps her husband, who is also her cousin?
The Britishers are really showing their ignorance of many, many things during this debacle
I saw her on Sky News and she was far less belligerent and dick-sh on that than she always seems to be on Twitter. She’s kind of a less horrendous Katie Wotsit.
